Thanks! When I had this roughed in, I showed it to my 9-year-old and she approved.

In truth, nine-year-olds should run the world. Candy would be free and everyone would get recess.

Cool picture! The colour of the flower looks preaty. I never heard of the program called "Art Range" before.

Thank you!

ArtRage is a British painting software. The freeware version is quite good. It's really feels as if you're painting with wet paint that flows off a brush.

I saw this on your page and thought - I see a person falling into the petals, and then wondered if it was my overactive imagination again. Nope, the title proves it. My other thought was more phoenix-like, of something burning up. Flare-and-gone.

msklystron In reply to nycterent [2009-05-22 19:07:11 +0000 UTC]

First, thank you so much for stopping by and commenting.

Titles are such tricky things. I agree, this picture could be viewed in a couple of ways. Landing does limit the viewer's interpretation. But I'm still at a loss as to what I might have called it. I'm open to suggestions.

nycterent In reply to msklystron [2009-05-22 19:09:25 +0000 UTC]

I think the title works perfectly, to be honest. My take on titles is that they should influence the interpretation, or at least guide the reader. The only other alternative that comes to me is "impact" but that's probably too violent to be appropriate. =]

msklystron In reply to nycterent [2009-05-22 20:33:36 +0000 UTC]

Or 'collision'! Thanks! I think you're right. Maybe the viewer gets some satisfaction out of seeing that the event in the picture could be seen another way.

Thank you! No, it didn't take too too long. I used the FREE version of ArtRage to create it.

...I'm assuming ArtRage is a program and not some new style that involves taking your anger out on an innocent canvas?

Really nice work for a first try, I love the petals - the way you mix pink and yellow with the blue works really well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

msklystron In reply to chugglepuff [2008-08-07 22:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Not violence in this case, but I felt the freedom of mucking about with paint with this software and I think that comes through.

Thanks! It looked so abstract at a glance that I felt adding anything more complex would detract. I had a lot of fun with the flower, using pinks, blues, yellows to offset/connect with the smeary tomato red.

chugglepuff In reply to msklystron [2008-08-08 22:59:54 +0000 UTC]

I think that style would work well for an Impressionist sort of piece... strong brush strokes and bold colours mixing into each other. *muses for some time*

Oleem [2008-08-06 19:00:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm impressed. It looks like it was painted traditionally! Lovely movement and colours, though I don't see a landing...I see a transformation from girl to flower [or vice versa?]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

msklystron In reply to Oleem [2008-08-06 19:59:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!!! I think you might enjoy this program. It's free too!

Hmmm... transformation... This is why I enjoy putting my work out there. Interpretations such as yours force me to take a second look at my own work. I can definitely see how it could be a transformation. Girl to flower, I think. When I was painting it I smeared away parts of the girl intentionally (namely, her visible arm) not worrying about the anatomy I'd carefully sketched in.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Oleem In reply to msklystron [2008-08-07 15:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Maybe. It does look interesting, but I have only a limited time with the computer so I'll probably just stick to doing art traditionally.

Other interpretations are always interesting. I'm amazed by the capacity other people have to understand things that aren't on the surface.

msklystron In reply to Oleem [2008-08-07 21:55:17 +0000 UTC]

You're doing great with traditional art.

Me too. People respond to art (whether they like it or not) because good art demands a response... it asks people to think or feel something.

This looks so neat! I love the falling effect, and it looks like the cahracter is falling into a giant lotus flower! Great work here

msklystron In reply to calicokatt [2008-08-05 17:43:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The program has such a painterly feel to it that this is what came out. It has a soft 'brush' that loads paint for fairly realistic strokes.

Aw, thanks! The 'moment' of impact.

I'm glad you want to check out ArtRage. I can't wait to see what you do with it. It's very easy to use, even for a novice like me.

What a nice thing to say!

You know, being judgemental of your work is part of being an artist whether you're just starting out or have been doing it for a long time.

Thank you very much!

I'm not afraid of bright colours. I use whatever seems to suit the mood I guess. The woman falling is a cartoon character I made up, called 'Firefly'.
