Thank you! *Jillianelf got me onto ArtRage. It is a really unique program. I love it!

Wow, retro-tastic!
I especially love the texture around the eyes.

Aw, thanks! Yeah, I thought she looked like an aging punk, or maybe a hard rock chick from the 70s.

That texture is courtesy of ArtRage. This program is so cool for two reasons: it lets you feel like you're really using wet paint (as much as a program can do so) and it gives you choices of painting surfaces, such as various weights/ textures of paper and canvas. I used the 'chalk' and 'encil' tools for the face and the paint tool for the rest.

See you used ArtRage while I was away, and a great image you painted as well. Sounds like you like the program...I would be lost without it and my wacom...wow life without wacom..scary concept Very nice Maggie!

Thank you! I really felt like I was painting when I did this one.

I'm so glad that you recommended ArtRage. I like it so well, that I've also suggested it to other artists here and some of my students. The wacom was so easy to get used to after having struggled with the little joystick on my laptop. The pressure sentitive tip of the pen is the best part for flowy lines and squiggles. I'm hooked.

I quite like this... the colour, texture... I don't know, maybe it's the apparent serenity of her face juxtaposed with the vividness of her hair. But I really like it.

No prob! :] And, yeah, I am a very textile person...when I go to an art museum I want to touch every painting I see...I doubt the security appreciates that. ;

msklystron In reply to Cyber-Toxin [2008-10-18 20:44:43 +0000 UTC]

Museums have those light rays now, that notify security when someone is even standing too close to a painting. ...Like the time my teen daughter and her friend got a warning at the Musee des Beaux Artes in Montreal...:/

I haven't heard of those...should maybe keep that in mind next time I go to the art museum.

msklystron In reply to kzeor [2008-10-17 01:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks!!! The tablet is a little different than straight drawing. But it's far easier than the handskill involved in drawing with an internal mouse. The tablet is quite freeing!

*b1gfan described it perfectly. It's intense.

It's really unique, and the expression is great. It seems the tablet's doing wonders for you too, it looks very natural. I have yet to try ArtRage. I probably should.

msklystron In reply to sandrodcpereira [2008-10-15 17:13:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the encouraging words!!!

I like 'unique'!!! I'm trying to bring my mind/skill set as a traditional artist to digital art and consciously attempting to avoid the perfection possible through digital art.

The best thing about the tablet is the ease with which I can now scribble and sketch! I draw directly on the computer. Getting the lines to go where I wanted them to without wobbling was really really hard with the internal mouse of my laptop.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of my new monitor (which is on back order...grrrr), which will increase the amount of canvas I'll be able to view onscreen and improve my ability to sustain the flow of long lines and large volumes, which I now must work on in smaller chunks or at a reduced magnification.

I think you'd really enjoy ArtRage. It's just like mucking about with paint.

sandrodcpereira In reply to msklystron [2008-12-27 18:49:06 +0000 UTC]

Incredibly late reply, but just wanted to tell you that I messed around with a trial of ArtRage and was really impressed! It's really the most lifelike art software I've played with.

I'd never use it instead of Photoshop, but I did waste about two hours on the trial, just messing with all the tools.

msklystron In reply to sandrodcpereira [2009-03-09 02:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Dang, a late reply to yours! I've been off writing and doing art, etc.

I'm so glad you discovered the joy of ArtRage! You can ship the finished jpeg into photoshop and play with it afterwards... add layers, text and whatnot.

sandrodcpereira In reply to msklystron [2009-04-23 12:22:32 +0000 UTC]

Can't say I've used it much lately.

There is some stuff I need to focus on now, so I haven't had much free time to fool around, but I might do something "serious" whenever I get some.

Ah, well, I'm sort of retro by virtue of age...

Thanks! This sort of 'mood' drawing is fairly quick for me to do in traditional media, but now it's almost as easy to draw this way on the computer with my tablet!

How are you liking the tablet? I love this piece, the palette is gorgeous and her face has the sweetest expression. Good job with the textures, too [you fooled me. From the thumbnail I could have sworn this was traditional!]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

msklystron In reply to Oleem [2008-10-14 03:36:35 +0000 UTC]

OMG!!! I love it! I can sketch and doodle with it! Before I had to draw each line with such effort to keep them for going wiggly. (As you'll recall, I don't have a scanner and drew directly onscreen.) Now as I'm getting used to the pen (my finger keeps drifting over to the mouse...) I can draw just as I could with a real pen, pencil, paintbrush. The pressure sensitivity is great! What a difference.

Thank you! The textures are courtesy of ArtRage. You might have fun with this program. The starter edition is free. The full version is a whopping $25. It took a little getting used to, because the virtual brush picks up colours below as if you were working with wet acrylic or oils, which is unusual for a digital graphics program.

Hey thanks!!! The hair was a lot of fun to do with, among other tools, the 'aint tube' on ArtRage. I didn't use a model or ref for this, but it's loosely based on my oldest daughter's hair (which isn't blue or red).

Thank you!!! It means a lot coming from you.

I don't want to discourage or put down the young folks here, but do you think that maybe age adds that little bit of depth and complexity to emotion in art? I definitely find it in your work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lauracarter In reply to msklystron [2008-10-14 22:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I actually would have to say that that is true. I think the experiences life throws at you by the time you reach our age group makes a huge difference in not only how we create but how we view the art around us. I know that my taste in art has grown so much over the years, not just with the access I had to it at the framing store but with the way that I view life now. I need more depth and complexity in the art that I view to find it enjoyable. I am no longer satisfied by something that is simply pretty or technically perfect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

msklystron In reply to lauracarter [2008-10-15 20:55:16 +0000 UTC]

Someone remarked at the subtle/ complex way I treated the subject of love in a poem. It's life experience, plus the fact that I've been writing poems on and off for over 20 years. This is not to say that a young person can't achieve the same thing without the experience. It just isn't as likely. Young artists are best at originality, creativity (being 'ahead of their time', expressiveness and bold statements.

I detest sentimentality and shock for shock's sake. I like to see depth of thought and/or feeling behind a picture or piece of writing, but the subject matter itself can be humble. I tend toward typical beauty standards as a rule in my own work, but not perfection. Technical skill is certainly something to be proud of, but it has little to do with art.

Thanks!!! Definitely sad. But it's okay to be sad sometimes... And even though she looks sort of hard, I think I left a little tenderness there. ArtRage is great for paint textures. I think I'll touch this one up a bit, print it and have it framed, so that it's not so virtual.

meish In reply to msklystron [2008-10-14 15:43:52 +0000 UTC]

I always think the name ArtRage is funny. It sounds a word for when you've got a great idea that you keep messing up and then get really irritated.

Have fun with that.
