Description
Born in 1656 in New York, Kateri Tekakwitha, lily of the Mohawks, lost her parents to Smallpox at the age of four, herself surviving the disease but with permanant scars. She converted to Christianity as a teenager, much to the disapproval of her tribespeople. She worked with missionaries in New York and Canada. Known for her kindness, she was a devout Catholic who cared for the sick and aged before falling prey to disease at the age of 24 and passing away. According to legend, upon her death her smallpox scars vanished. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized in 2012, being the first Native American to gain the title of Saint.
