How do you sculpt like that with Sculpey clay? Do you add to the figure or do you just hack away at a block of clay?...

theSINbeforechristma [2006-06-25 22:52:10 +0000 UTC]

what do you sculpt with...?
i am a sculpter but not of suck amazing ability...[link]
i use low fire ceramic clay..but it dries out to quickly for me to get such fine detailing..
plus it is usially to flimsy to be self supporting....you blow me away!

Its truly amazing! Just so I understand though, what is this made of? clay, plaster, ? Also I thought that these uncast models would fall over.... ...although looks like Im wrong..

this is absolutely stunning... you know I"ve never seen sculpture like yours before... it's just absolutely amazing. I've got a few questions if you don't mind... how long did it take you to make this from start to finish, what do you make it out of specifically and is there a hardening/baking process it goes through afterwards? also, how on earth do you manage those details? I would assume you've either got teensy fingers, or you use some tools.

also... sorry for the bombardment of questions here, but who made your avatar?

I'm thinking about getting more into sculpture and at this point I could use all the advice/help I can get.

thanks, you're a constant inspiration.

Wow, you're too kind, thank your for your lovely comment!

Well on to your questions:

The amount of time working on her really got lost because I took a month off ...I can't tell you how many hours, I just worked on her off and on throughout a month I tried to keep track..hehe The details took the longest though, getting the character was the easy part, and I do know that the head was redone like 3 times, because it was really hard to get right..hehe.

I used Super Sculpey, and you can bake it at 275 F in a regular oven at home! You can find more about it at [link] I love the stuff...though I've never tried anything else..there could be better stuff out there

I do use some tools to get the details The turtle, little needle weapons, and the jewel on her back were all fired separately and then glued on. I mostly use a rubber tipped tool that you can see in my tutorial, which shows all the materials I use for my models >>> [link]

And my avatar was done by [link] he's now working at Blue Sky and is awesome at what he does..hehe

Hope my answers helped..hehe If you do start working in clay, feel free to ask me anything through a note, I'm an open book

Hi! I make some sculpey figures too... And I was wondering... How long did it take you to make this figure? It's awesome, and I've seen some other stuff you made, and you are very good at it! This one is very neat, how did you make the clothes stay "all flowy" like that? wires?

Wow. Did you do the back based on your imagination, or were you provided with a "degree turn" picture? I know that you said your commissions are closed but I am wondering how much it would cost to do this picture: [link] It's a character that is in a "soon to be" cartoon, that I am the voice of. This is what I think they came up with for the "final" draft of Seffy, so I am excited beyond anything, and I'd love to see her made into a real life figurine/model. If you'd be willing, I'd dearly love to have this made. You are so good at sculpting, that I just thought maybe you wouldn't mind me asking.

Unbelievable. I always held sculpture to be infinitely more difficult than drawing, in that you had to create a believable image no matter from which angle you looked at it; whereas in drawing you have only to capture one angle for your piece. You've done an incredible job here. I came here from HOON's drawing of the "chopstick princess," and I'm very impressed at how you can create a 3d image that is the spitting image of her painting, literally bringing it to life in the 3d world.
Let's just say I like it. Alot.

I DEMAND TO KNOW WHY THIS IS IN THE SCRAPS SECTION

But wow man, this is incredible. It's like looking at those models of anime characters....the SUPER detailed ones (shit, even some of the more expensive ones are less detailed than this!)

I'm just bloody stunned (X3; I'll give a better comment in the other section~!)

anime529 [2005-11-03 05:01:35 +0000 UTC]

wow that is just amazing! Do you do that just by eye or is there some special trick? And how do you keep her hair and dress and stuff from sagging where the clay is thinner and weaker? I always had that problem when i played around with clay. The thin parts just dropped and died...
