The League of Shadows

Onishusoku:
(Ra's al Ghul)
Design based on Sin Tzu, villain of the Batman: The Animated Series video game character, Sin Tzu.

Known throughout the shinobi world as The Demon’s Head, Onishusoku is in command of Hitoshirenu’s League of Shadows; One of the largest network of assassins in the world.  However, that was not enough for him.  He decided to expand his network, in order to have a worldwide monopoly on the death trade.  He tasked various high ranking members in the League with helping to establish the League’s presence outside of their borders.  High profile assassins were recruited into the ranks of the League, while those who had the misfortune to refuse were eliminated.  With his sphere of influence exponentially increased, Onishusoku has set his sights much higher than control over the Hidden Regions…to global domination.

- The Shi no Shichinin (Seven Men of Death) are the most deadly members of The League of Shadows, as well as the personal assassination squad that answer only to Onishusoku.
- Obsidian Archer, Lady Vic, the Tsukumogami; Hook, are some of the Shi no Shichinin.
- Being submerged in the mystical waters in the pools of the Iwa-Naga Springs has granted Onishusoku enhanced strength, speed, and stamina.  He has used the springs to heal from fatal wounds; which has also prolonged his life and maintained his vitality.
- The springs also have the side effect of inducing madness.  Onishusoku’s mostly reserved demeanor masks his gradual onset of insanity.  However, his acts of extreme violence and lethal skills are legendary amongst the shinobi world, and few wish to push him to reveal this side of him if not necessary.
- He regards Batman as his worthiest student and opponent; addressing him as "Detective" out of respect for his intellectual brilliance, and has frequently sought to make The Dark Knight his successor.
- He is one of the few adversaries of the Batman's to have deduced his secret identity as Komori Watanabe, but keeps silent on the matter due to his sense of respect for Batman.

Ubu
Design based on Gyoubu of anime, Basilisk

The completely loyal attendant of The Demon’s Head is constantly at his side.  From birth, he has been raised to lay down his life for his master and carry out his commands without question.  Despite his considerable size, he is unbelievably fast and immensely skilled.  He is the most trusted of Onishusoku’s inner circle, including his children.  He has an almost religious reverence towards him, and will punish anyone who dares lay a hand on him or show any measure of disrespect.  I wanted there to be a kind of uniformity to the league, so I decided to use the foundation of Daimyomaru’s, Red Robin ninja uniform to function as the basis for the standard league gear.  I altered this to fit the design for Ubu by just giving him the sleeveless tunic, and made his pants similar in color to the outfit worn by the version of the character in Batman: The Animated Series.

- Ubu, despite his strength and skill, gets repeatedly punked by Batman whenever Ubu tries to establish dominance over him.
- Like the B:TAS version, Ubu has the same tendency to refer to anyone who defies The Demon’s Head as, “infidel”.
- Ubu is sometimes tasked to attend to either of the children of Onishusoku, while on missions for their father.  When this occurs, he treats them with the same level of protection he would his master, even to the point of laying down his life for them.
- When the heads of the noble shinobi clans meet, each leader is allowed to bring an attendant, acting as a bodyguard.  Onishusoku always chooses Ubu; and when two attendants are allowed, one of his daughters (usually Tsuyomi).

Shuo-Shi Sensei: Han Son (Sensei)
Design based on Young Justice animated series

One of the Four Great Shinobi Masters, known as the Yottsukonin, Shuo-Shi Sensei has taken the task of maintaining the ninja art and taijutsu training of the League of Shadows members.  He is a hard taskmaster and is not above eliminating any he deems would lessen the reputation of the League or the practice of ninjutsu in general.  As a foreigner himself, he doesn’t care about his student’s backgrounds or origins.  He just demands obedience and excellence.  He often rewards those who use duplicitous means to best their peers, as their personal expression of Nindo (Way of the Ninja), but only as long as it is not against the League, Onishusoku, or himself.  He saves his higher level training for those who earn the favor of either himself or Onishusoku.  Restricted from training anyone in his most comprehensive style that he traded to O-Sensei; The Wǔ Xíng, he trained a young boy from birth in the Monkey Style.  It is the sixth style associated with the Wǔ Xíng, which combines the five into a new one.  He also employs the use of the Omoishihai no Jutsu- (Mind control technique) to bring rogue ninja under the control of the League; Omoishihai is the shinobi art that was traded to him from Yoru Sensei.  In particular, this technique was used on The Bronze Tiger.

- The student he trained in the Sixth Style is the deadly assassin, Silver Monkey.
- In the comics, Sensei is not only his mentor, but also is the biological father of Ra’s Al Ghul.  Here, the roles are reversed, but Sensei does act as an advisor and Onishusoku resepcts his wisdom.
- The only other member of the Yottsukonin that Han-Son remains in contact with is, Kirigi Sensei.

Daimyomaru Watanabe: (Damien Wayne)
Design based on Son of Batman animated movie

Conceived as a result of Komori's infiltration of the League of Shadows as the shinobi initiate, The Dark; Daimyomaru is the grandson of Onishusoku, The Demon’s Head.  The Dark was sent on a mission and quickly encountered a stunning kunoichi that went by the name, Tsuyomi.  A longtime operative of the League, she was both appalled and intrigued by the mysterious ninja's nobility.  During the course of their mission they became close and shared a night together.   It wasn't until sometime after the completion of that same mission that he discovered that she was in fact the daughter of Onishusoku;  Leader of the League of Shadows.  He would decide to keep his distance from her, as their ideals were vastly different from one another, despite the mutual attraction.  After emerging from the Batcaves as The Shadow of the Bat, The Dark Knight is extended the offer to wed Tsuyomi and become Oni no Sozokujin (Heir of the Demon).  He refuses and cuts ties with the league, breaking the heart of Tsuyomi.  She would return to him when he was at his lowest point after the tragic loss of his first apprentice, Redwing.  The two spent the night consoling each other, and in the morning resumed their ethical stances, as well as the distance between them.  Upon discovering that she was with child, she went off the grid to protect the identity of her unborn child.  After his birth, she trained him as she was trained, and his grandfather escalated that training by teaching the boy himself.  As the legend of The Batman grew, Tsuyomi told her son tales of the great shinobi that was his father and the important work he was doing which kept him away from them.  When Batman became possessed by A-komouriyasha, The Demon Bat of Mt. Goth-Ahm, and proceeded to go on a rampage, a coup attempt was made to oust Onishusoku.  Fearing for her son's life, Tsuyomi sends Daimyomaru to his father to complete his training and ensure his protection until the time comes when he can take his grandfather's seat as head of the League.

- I have Daimyomaru in his standard League uniform, which is similar, yet slightly different from the rest of the Shadows in the league.  It is reminiscent of his look in The Son of the Bat animated film.
- His Red Robin outfit is based on this design.
- Daimyomaru only respects those who outrank him or those he cannot defeat in combat.  As the youngest ranking Jounin trained by the deadliest assassins…that list is not very long, at least in his mind.
- Daimyomaru is never hesitant to kill; something that deeply bothers his father, and he attempts to refrain from at his behest.
- Originally I had stated that Daimyomaru was conceived during Komori’s time as The Dark, but I did the math, and that would’ve made him too old by the time he reveals himself.

Tsuyomi Oni-no-Ko: (Talia)
Design based on BTAS counterpart, Sonia from Ninja Gaiden, and DA artist,

In the years since the kunoichi met The Batman, Tsuyomi is repeatedly torn between loyalty to her father and her love of the Dark Knight.  She never revealed the existence of their son to her Beloved, as she didn’t want him to come to her out of a feeling of obligation.  Tsuyomi encounters the Demon Hunter, Bane while she was on a mission after the Knightfall incident.  She brings him to meet her father, Onishusoku, as a way to make amends for their falling out.  Bane enters the League of Shadows, and The Demon’s Head considers Bane a potential heir to his empire instead of Batman and decrees his daughter to marry him.  Initially amused by Bane, Tsuyomi later rejects the brute, regarding him as nothing more than a cunning animal compared to the more cultured intelligence of his predecessor.  Bane begins to express his obsession with Tsuyomi, which she feeds into by making him jealous by constantly comparing him to Batman.  Bane has a nightmare of Tsuyomi betraying him and stabbing him and then embracing Batman.  He devises a plot to complete what he started upon his initial meeting with The Bat.  After Batman defeats Bane, Onishusoku agrees that Bane was unworthy of his daughter and calls off their engagement.  With their relationship mended, Tsuyomi decides to reveal to her father the existence of his long awaited Oni no Sozokujin (Heir of the Demon); in the form of his grandson.

- Oni no Ko = Child of the Demon
- I gave my version of Talia a Japanese name rather than trying to convert Talia into one.
- The Knife she’s holding was in an image of her from the comics…I believe Cameron Stewart was the artist.
- I decided to give her a dagger as her secondary weapon, due to her use of it in The Dark Knight Rises, even if it was used to stab Batman.
- Although they were linked in TDKR, I choose to use the relationship between Talia and Bane from the comics, Bane of the Demon.
- The mission where she initially meets The Dark will play out similar to their first meeting in B:TAS.

Niisa Oni-no-Ko: (Nyssa)
Design based on Arrow TV series, and DAartist

The youngest daughter of Onishusoku, she has had to work the hardest to gain the attention of her father.  When her older brother died, The Demon’s Head had two daughters left to pass his empire to.  He raised them to be as deadly as any high ranked assassin class shinobi.  However, tradition dictated that the title be passed to the male heir.  Onishusoku sought to find a worthy replacement to marry his daughters off to, with his daughters instilling all of his teachings to their betrothed.  He saw great promise in the walk-in shinobi initiate, The Dark.  So much so, that he had the surviving legendary Ghostclan shinobi, The Grey Ghost, train him to honor a debt to him.  When The Dark evolved into The Batman, Onishusoku knew that he had chosen wisely.  However his evolution led him on a path away from the League of Shadows.  He gave his daughter consent to pursue her beloved to bring him back into the fold.  When this failed to happen, he decided to lay plans into motion to find a potential heir and suitable mate for his other daughter…despite her, proclivities.

- I wanted my version of Nyssa to resemble her look from Arrow
- Niisa will have a history with former League member, Red Canary aka Lady Blackhawk.
- Onishusoku has personally trained each of his children on how to use his signature weapon, the scimitar.  Each of them has their own and a secondary weapon that they have mastered.
-Niisa’s secondary weapon is the bow and arrow.  She trains with Obsidian Archer to improve his swordplay and taijutsu and improve her kyudo.
- Onishusoku’s fallback plan after Batman rejected his offer to become Oni no Sozokujin (Heir of the Demon), and Tsuyomi defied her father’s will, was to find a suitable mate to mold for Niisa…The Emerald Archer.
- The League of Shadows name Ori Kisaki will be given is Lataif-e-Saraha; Saraha is Tibetan for “The Arrow Shooter”
- part of Niisa's design came from a Teen Titans, Go version of Nyssa; done by Deviantartist

Dusan Oni-no-Ko:  aka White Ghost
Design based on Comics and animated appearances

The only son of the Demon’s Head was born an albino; and as such, was considered flawed.  Always seeking favor in his father’s eyes, Dusan trained harder than any shinobi, but there were certain skills he was always lacking.  One of those traits, however, was not loyalty.  When the last remaining member of the the Ghostclan (which was founded by the departed shinobi master, The Spectre), Grey Ghost came to the shinobi order seeking to have his clan recognized and given a voice on the council, he was blocked…despite his service in the war.  They argued that one man does not a clan make.  Onishusoku approached the shinobi Ghost Arts master and told him that he would support his bid for recognition and help him establish his clan…if he made his son his pupil.  Grey Ghost was apprehensive, knowing that something was bound to be attached to the deal, but he agreed.  It took some time, but Dusan grew to become one of the most feared shinobi in the Hidden Regions under his tutelage.  Taking on the name, White Ghost, his legend began to grow; until one mission, where he tragically lost his life.  Grey Ghost felt responsible for the death of The Heir of the Demon, and relayed the news to his father.  Onishusoku kept true to his word and supported the acceptance of the Ghostclan’s status within the order.  Grey Ghost took on no apprentices after the order agreed to recognize his Clan.  He took on missions and met and voted with the council on shinobi affairs, but shied away from training pupils for years.  Even though they had both fulfilled their ends of their initial bargain, Grey Ghost felt indebted to him for losing his son on his watch; so when The Demon’s Head requested that he take another pupil he reluctantly acquiesced.  He would consider this a favor that would balance out the scales.  After a year of working with the young shinobi initate, The Dark, he would begin again thinking about how to grow his clan; eventually taking on pupils from three of the noble houses of the Shinobi Order.

- Grey Ghost’s pupils were; Wildcat (Catclan), Black Canary (Blackbird Clan), and Question (Enigma Clan)
- Dusan’s design is based on his comic appearance, his Son of the Bat animated look, and an image I found online.
- When I discovered Ra’s had a son named White Ghost, I knew I had to include him with a link to Batman’s one time sensei.
- I gave White Ghost a set of goggles to emulate his master, Grey Ghost, as well as address the light sensitivity most albinos have.
- There may, or may not be another White Ghost emerging (like in the comics), who may or may not be linked to the new Ghostclan…

Obsidian Archer: Kisai Mahoutsukai (Malcolm Merlyn)
Design based on MacFarlane Toys’; Takeda, The Archer (Samurai Spawn)

Kisai Mahoutsukai joined the League of Shadows after mastering the use of his Precious Bow and Arrows, and quickly made a name for himself.  Onishisoku, The Demon's Head, took note and watched his ascension in the league.  He was unmatched in his skill of archery.  At times, he was sent in to assist others as a "closer" (an agent who is brought in to ensure the successful completion of a mission). He is given a lot of leeway in regards to his free time. Eventually The Demon’s Head promotes him, giving him the Legue name; Lataif-e-Akhfa. He joins the ranks of the Shi no Shichinin, becoming part of Onishusoku’s inner circle.  He is also one of the agents tasked with expanding the league's influence outside of the borders of The Hidden Regions, by recruiting or eliminating highly ranked assassins.  He also sets up satellite operations around the world to provide support to the new League franchises.

- Since “Mouhoutsukai” is Japanese for “Magician”, I wanted my version of Merlyn to have a title similar to, “Al Sa-Her”; the one given to Malcolm by Ra’s al Ghul, that wasn’t just his last name.
- The Lataif-e-sitta are also known as, the Six Subtleties.  These six subtleties are thought to be parts of the inner self meant to be awakened through different means.
- The Lataif-e-Akhfa , (one of the chakra-like centres in sufi; the practice of mysticism in Islam)are not only energy centers but also forms of consciousness representing the capacity of the soul to simply be and not do—The term Akhfa or ikhfa means most arcane, deeply mysterious, or obscure, subtlety. It is said to be located in the chest and represented by the color purple.
- Since I showed Kisai with his mask on and hood up in the Precious Archers pic, I wanted to show his face with it down.

Lady Vic: Elaine Marsh-Morton

Design based on mmorpg Pathfinder assassin character

Lady Elaine Marsh-Morton is an English noblewoman who secretly works as an assassin, bounty hunter, and mercenary.  Apart from being a genuine English aristocrat, Lady Elaine is descended from a long line of British soldiers and mercenaries.  The money she earns from her secret career helps prevent foreclosure on her impoverished family estate.  Elaine is a highly skilled martial artist and athlete, and equally skilled with firearms. Her resume gets the notice of The Demon’s Head, and a recruiter is sent to her home in England.  Her test to join the League of Shadows was to assassinate the Abbot of the Bloodhaven Monastery.  Although she was unsuccessful (due to the intervention of Nightwing and Akifumi Takaharu), the determination to complete the job pleased Onishusoku.  She agrees to take some jobs in Hitoshirenu while training under the tutelage of Onishusoku himself.  She is immensely skilled with edged weapons, but has a sentimental preference for a collection of antique weapons handed down by her ancestors.  Although highly trained in the use of firearms, she learned the hard way not to carry them while within the Hidden Regions.
- I chose for Vic to use different types of knives and swords while she is in the Hidden Regions.  I wanted the rapier to be one of them as it is very different from the katana and ninjato used by most there.
- The “vic” in Lady Vic stands for victim, due to the belief that she victimizes anyone that she faces.
- She is attracted to Nightwing, physically and due to him being skilled enough to survive a confrontation with her.

The Shadows
Design based on mmorpg Pathfinder ninja assassin character

The Shadows are what the individual entry level members of the League of Shadows are themselves, referred to as.  A vast network of shinobi (not bound to any particular clan) gathered by Onishusoku; which perform various levels of all of the different job classes in the Shinobi Order. When the job requires a level higher than the ninja under his banner, The Demon’s Head usually broker’s a deal for the client with the corresponding Specialist clan.  Shadows have the ability to move up in the League and receive specialized training from their resident Yottsukonin master that they refer to only as Sensei.  Only the most deadly earn the ability to graduate into the Assassins Class, which is represented in the Shinobi Council by Onishusoku.

- The Shadows are of different backgrounds and races.
- I wanted to add some elements of the League from CW’s Arrow.
- I also wanted them to look like the basic ninja fodder that they are, but unique.  The similarities in Daimyomaru and Ubu’s outfits are presnt as well.

Kyodai Ken
Design based on animated counterpart and Ryu Hyabusa from video game, Ninja Gaiden

Handpicked to study under the Yottsukonin Master, Yoru-Sensei by Onishusoku to learn to be one of the inheritors of the wealth of knowledge of ninja skills and lore.  For years he trained alone with the old master until one day when an old foe of his master showed up.  The two old enemies fought and then abruptly ended the skirmish just as quickly as it began.  The result was the old samurai left his student with Yoru sensei to take on as another student.  Kyodai resented the presence of the other pupil and spent every available opportunity to show his dominance in the arts over his classmate.  The more he proved he was Watanabe's better, the more his sensei looked down on him.  Eager to get in the field, he began to secretly take contracts for the Hidden Regions branch of the Yakuza.  Kyodai tried to liberate his master’s prized Sword from the dojo, but Komori caught him in the act and attempted to stop the theft.  Kyodai, still being the better of the two, beat Watanabe repeatedly; but his determination to prevent him from leaving with the weapon kept him there long enough for Yoru-Sensei to arrive.  Enraged that his master chose to believe the interloper over his "true" student he attacked the aged shinobi, only to be shown that not only had he not taught him all of the techniques in his arsenal, but why he was the master!  Banished from the dojo, Kyodai left the hidden region of Hitoshirenu and ventured out into modern Japan.  He made contact with branch members of the Yakuza he was affiliated with.  He honed his craft and became one of the point people for Onishusoku's expansion of the League outside of the Hidden Regions.  He eventually makes his way back to to Goth-Ahm prefecture to take his revenge on Watanabe-san, only to discover that a now legendary shinobi known as The Batman employs the same techniques and fighting style as his old temple brother....

- Kyodai Ken was one of my favorite original characters from B:TAS.  Adding him to the MDCU was never in question.
- I wanted his uniform to be less basic and slightly modernized it, as he has spent significant amount of time the present day Japan.
- The Yakuza refer to Kyodai as simply, The Ninja.
- There will be some version of Night of the Ninja, and Day of the Samurai reenacted in the MDCU.
- Whether Kyodai will suffer the same fate as his cartoon counterpart is up in the air…
