The Tale of Tamamizu is an old fairytale from Japan. Tamamizu was a kitsune. In the begining of the story, they refer to her as 'he." He falls in love with a hime he sees, and transforms into a woman to be her handmaid, and takes on the name Tamamizu. At one point in the story, his mistress is participating in a contest to find the most beautiful leaf. Tamamizu departs and turns back into a fox. Even though she's a fox again, the story calls her "she." (so it seems the gender change was permanent) Her family all helps her to find the most beautiful leaf in all of Nippon. This is a picture of Tamamizu showing her mistress the leaf. When a kitsune is careless, one can see their tail sticking from their robes...Read the short story here: [link]
