Thank you very much. (It's one of the paintings I keep on my bedroom wall. When the main light is off, and just the bedside lamp is on, the painting seems more atmospheric.)

Someone wrote a canon era fic with a scene that they said was inspired by this art piece here:
archiveofourown.org/works/1131…
Just thought I'd give you a heads up in case you didnt know and wanted to take a peek
I love this painting sooooo much!

Many thanks for giving me the heads-up.
Actually she dropped me a comment and let me know though, so I've now linked to her fic under my painting. So flattering for someone to write a fic based on your artwork, and such an enjoyable fic too! It's really nice.

This reminds me lot of The Cask of Amantillado, the Edgar Allen Poe work. Great job. Love it.

Oh wow! I'm so glad to have inspired you, and such an great story too. That's terrific. Thank you for letting me know, it was great to read a scenario inspired by something I'd painted.
If you don't mind, I'll link to your story under my picture? (Although if you'd rather I didn't, then just let me know and I'll delete the link there, no problem.)

Oh, no, that's wonderful! I wasn't even really expecting you to read it, and certainly not link it to your work. I'm truly honored. I'm really glad you liked it. ^_^

I love the idea, you made it so vivid that I can't look at it for too long... It reminds me of The Black Cat so I am very convinced that Merlin will turn out ok (i can't accept otherwise and Uther better be put behind bars as well

Thank you so much, that's a really nice compliment that you find it quite affecting.
Well, I think Arthur definitely rescues him in time and they get their happy ending.
Though with Uther jailed, their lives will still be interesting. The press and TV etc have an ongoing huge interest in killers and their victims/escaped victims.

I know I've commented before on this lovely, haunting piece, but I was reminded of it recently updating my personal fic links, and I realized that although this prompt/piece was originally intended to have a fic as well, that I seem to have misplaced it. I know its been a while, but I was wondering if you had any links to stories inspired by this painting (or any other of your pieces) that you wouldn't mind sharing.
Again, truly tragic and chilling piece, incredibly well done!

Sorry for the delay in replying.
No, with the horror fest it was never a pairing-artwork-with-writing fest, it was just about producing stand-alone stories or artwork on a horror theme. So there was never a story to go with the painting.
A couple of people have mentioned thinking about writing a story to go with it, but as far as I know I don't think anyone ever did.
I always thought myself, (if I was writing it, which I'm not going to 'cause it would be crap ), that the story would start off with Merlin being an architect or draughtsman. So when he comes to stay with Arthur at his ancestral home, he goes for a walk in the grounds and notices that part of the exterior of the house doesn't seem to fit with what he knows of the interior.
Maybe he mentions this to Arthur, and this later gives Arthur the clue as to where to search for him after Uther bricks Merlin up...

Thank you for clearing that up. It was sometimes a little confusing, but I love reading it all, and seeing everyone's contributions.
Its a wonderful idea for how to write it, and I'm sure you'd succeed wonderfully if you tried. Its clearly something that inspired a lot of people, even if its only ideas.
Good luck with all your art!

This is just so wrong.
If anyone had to be that demented, it would have been his father.
You drew this too well and the story that goes along with it is really bringing me down.
I will not thank you, but that alone should be sign that you did a 'good' job.

Sorry I made you feel down.
The painting was done for a Merlin Halloween Horror Fest, so it was never going to be light and fluffy.
On the plus side Arthur does rescue Merlin shortly after this scene, so all turns out well in the end.

No, no-one ever wrote a story to it, it's just the painting I'm afraid.

Have you ever read the "Cask of Amantiado" by Edgar Allen Poe?

You're not the first person in comments to mention that story. Yeah, I have read it, and it's brilliant. I love Poe.
Though, in fact, the painting was more inspired by a cheesy horror film I saw on TV when I was a kid, and that has always stayed with me. (Although the plot was nothing like it, I think the film itself must have been very loosely inspired by "The Cask of Amontillado" though.)

No, I don't think anyone did, as far as I know.
I do love Poe, though I haven't read him for a long time, his atmosphere and characters are great.
I read Henry James' "The turn of the screw" recently and must say I was very disappointed, although it's so famous I didn't think it was a patch on Poe. The governess seemed to behave TOTALLY ridiculously, (even if you side with the theory that she's a bit unhinged to start with), and the whole story just wasn't scary at all. I thought the last chapter redeemed it a bit, and was interesting. But.......not that impressed.

The Black Cat terrified me, but back to your drawing the amount of emotion on Merlin's face is astounding. I want to rush down into the cellar and save him myself. XD Fanboy to the rescue. But amazing job, you do awesome work.

I love it. So Uther took all the guys and drugged them and berried them alive? Arthur then found out and went down there and he met Merlin?

Well, pretty much.
Though I thought Arthur knew Merlin, and took him back to the house. And then was surprised when Merlin disappeared. He didn't know what Uther was doing.

Arthur saves him though.
And the painting was done for a Halloween Merlin horror fest...so there had to be something scary/creepy/dangerous in it.
