Description Some further garden bird photographs obtained using my Canon EOS M5 control from afar by a Samsung smart phone.

Female (?) goldfinch feeding.
Hidden GemsAfter only 1 year, I have managed to investigate and to get working one of the major features of my Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera: the WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities such that the camera can be linked wirelessly to my smart phone, in this case a Samsung S8. I had tried this when I first bought the camera, but got hopeless lost trying to set it up. Now, with more determination, I have managed it. The upshot is that I can remotely control and fire the M5 from the smart phone. Given that WiFi and Bluetooth communications cam take place over 10s of meters, I need not be any where near the camera in order to operate it. The result is that I can set up the camera near wildlife, go away and be out of sight, yet take shots when something interesting comes into range. Basically, that is how I have been taking the recently posted shots of garden birds and intruders such as those below.

Nice shot and capture...almost looks like she's aware of you...

I wondered that too, Steven. The way I was taking these shots was by remote WiFi control. So it is possible that birds didn't recognise the camera on the tripod as a threat unlike someone holding a camera. Then when a click was heard the bird turned to look and the image captured by the next in the continuous shoot. Anyway, some neat shots!

Many Thanks.

Yes you've gotten some wonderful shots...don't know if you know " newcastlemale " but he's using a drone to get his shot's...Steven

Yep - know Graeme - his drone shots are incredible. I've thought about that myself, but probably wouldn't find the time or space for it.

Costly too, to get one of the big drones.

A lovely shot of this goldfinch! However, since you've requested it for feedback:

I like the colours in this scene where the cold tones in the background give nice contrast to the warm red on the bird 's head, except for the neck. A slight change of POV might help for that. The composition is nice, but the lines of the birdhouse are crooked and my attention goes to the branch in the background. You can see the feathers on the bird, but u used ISO-800 which results in noise / grainy texture. Perhaps a lower ISO would prevent that. Noise can easily be removed by using Neat, but you might lose the details in the feathers. If u use it, use it with caution.

One thing I don't like is the placement of the logo over the nail. If it was placed on the lower left or on the birdhouse it wouldn't be distracting, imho.Β

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback - most useful. As for the ISO - indeed I would love to have had it way lower, but then, given the prevailing light conditions, the Tv would have been way to long for anything resembling a sharp shot. We are at the mercy of available light. Ideally, ISO 100 and a Tv of 1/1000th second would be what I would want. As to point of view, these shots are taken remotely using the WiFi facility offered on the EOS M5 camera. So the camera is in a fixed position. If a bird lands on the perch then it is all but inevitable that the perch and feeder will look slightly out of perfect alignment, and exactly how the bird is perching is a matter of chance. To get around these problems I use continuous shooting mode with a burst of 4-5 shots, and pick the "best" of the bunch. In fact, I think the branch on the left and the feeder make a fair frame within a frame for the bird. I agree about the signature - that should be on the left.

Many Thanks again.

My pleasure.

Oh, you used a remote WiFi facility in a fxed position. That changes everything. You got lucky then to get the shot.
The thing about the branch is subjective.Β It's just an idea. If you think it's ok, it's ok.

Regards,

VS

Okavanga In reply to LuLupoo [2018-01-28 07:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, you may have a point there, Lucy. They way I shoot these images involves the camera and lens being nearby and me not being there but watching on my smart phone. I use what is called continuous shooting mode and when the bird looks to be doing something interesting I press the shutter release on the phone and the camera takes a series of 4 shots. I suspect, but can't prove it, that after the first shot of the set, the bird looks around to see where the sound of the shutter came from and hence is looking at the camera hen the second ad subsequent shots are fired.

Many thanks.
