Hi!
Actually they do. The armors that I make are made up of sturdy leathers. I only choose high quality leather and as in this case, I harden it and mold it by hand. Note that even though these armors can protect you, none of mine are designed to be used with live weapons. They are created for LARP (Live Action Role Playing) games.
There are some international events and competitions that use Live weapons (swords, axes, maces, polearms, etc) with real blade, but all involved are obliged to wear heavy plated armors with chain mails underneath and other specific gear.

but i forgot: The straps are 5-6 oz veg-tan leather
