Description A confidential Justice Department memo concludes that the U.S. government can order the killing of American citizens if they are believed to be “senior operational leaders” of al-Qaida or “an associated force” -- even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S.

The 16-page memo, a copy of which was obtained by NBC News, provides new details about the legal reasoning behind one of the Obama administration’s most secretive and controversial polices: its dramatically increased use of drone strikes against al-Qaida suspects abroad, including those aimed at American citizens, such as the September 2011 strike in Yemen that killed alleged al-Qaida operatives Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. Both were U.S. citizens who had never been indicted by the U.S. government nor charged with any crimes.

The memo was leaked to NBC News national investigative correspondent Michael Issikoff, who released it last night, February 4, 2013. Complete story here: [link]

I never trust any government that wants to disarm it's population, because if it wants to disarm the population, they're doing SOMETHING that they're worried about you fighting back against...

The power of the government has be growing geometrically over the past decade. First the wiretaps and the airport searches, then the detaining and killing of citizens on a whim. It's a very dangerous trend, and the People need to start concerning themselves with it.

This is old news. People have been talking about it for months now that I know about, and they only just released? Smells fishy.

You're only half correct -- the drone story has been out for months; what is new is the memo justifying the legality of killing Americans suspected of terrorism, but with no charge or indictment, or even intelligence suggesting that they are about to attack the United States.

I sometimes think it's a losing battle talking about this. I've talked about the NDAA and no one really takes the time or even takes the claims about it seriously because it's so extreme.

You ain't kidding. And don't forget those who accuse people who are opposed to this as being terrorist sympathizers, upset that "one of our own" got taken out. This coming from people who otherwise wouldn't trust Obama to give them the correct time of day!
