Description Recently bought a trio of Mass Effect figs to represent my preferred party. The Tali fig wasn't bad, but it wasn't *right* either. So I did what I could to fix it. The one toward the right (with the omni-tool) is my sister's, unpainted, the way mine came in the box. The one to the left (with the close-up of the back of the hood on the far right) is the one I painted, in case the somewhat sloppy linework isn't a dead giveaway. It's a learning process, and I'm getting better. At least I didn't have to bust out the green stuff and give her hair or anything. Although that gives me an idea to maybe buy another Tali and a Miranda, say, kitbash 'em and maybe do a helmet-less Tali...
...nah, I'm not *that* ambitious. For now.

Update: Open for commissions if you want something similar done. See my front page.

I bought the same one, when mine arrived the paint on it was clumsy to say the least. Was a bloody mess. After seeing this it's motivated me to re paint my own, you've done a brilliant job BTW. Very impressive.

I definitely love your modded version much better! It just gives her so much more life/realism to the actual character in game. The standard version is so...blah :C Like they couldn't be bothered.

Thanks very much! I couldn't just let it go on being so drab and unlike her.

No, dude, no, don't buy a Miranda for Tali's face, why would you do that to Tali I thought you liked her.

Honestly, if I hadn't been present and actually observed you painting this, I wouldn't be able to believe this was hand-painted. This came out absolutely GORGEOUS and that's not a word I throw around carelessly. I'll probably be called a heretic for saying this and ostracized by the entire fan community, but I actually like the dark purple base with the violet pattern here better than the lighter lavender she has in-game, I think it's a better contrast and it looks absolutely beautiful. I also see you touched up the gold and added the kind of mesh pattern for the black parts of the suit, definitely an improvement.

I have to admit though, I am a little shocked and aghast at the fact that you got rid of her omni-tool. It's her source of power!

I didn't completely get rid of it, I just had to carefully cut it away to paint her glove. I'm contemplating putting it back on if I can manage to get just a teeny droplet of glue to adhere the split halves together over her wrist.

Also, hah, I only suggest the Miranda head because I know it's (a) the right size and (b) the hair's about right and I can shave/sculpt the features to be right. Believe me, if there is a different female 6" action figure head that works better, I will go for that instead. And that's if I even decide to go completely crazy and make a helmet-less one. Probably won't, would feel weirdly guilty every time I sneezed.

Yeah this is a nice job, what they are selling isn't great - especially the helmet visor bugs me a lot which isnt even in a transparent plastic... the best of a bad bunch. Vastly improved.

Thanks very much, glad you like it.

Yeah, the opaque helmet bugs me a bit, but the fig was made for ME2 when they hadn't even decided what she looked like under there so what're you gonna do. :shurg:

Nice work on both her customizations and the ones you did for Garrus and Shepard. Even if the linework isn't perfect, your painted version of her looks worlds better than she does out of the box. Out of curiosity, what kind of paint works for customizing these figures? I've got Garrus and Tali and would love to try something similar. (Really, I would LOVE to replace Tali's facemask with a translucent one and sculpt her face underneath, but I'm worried I'll mess the figure up badly!)

Thanks very much! I appreciate the kind words. I like her a lot better now too, occasional quavery line or no.

I used pretty standard acrylic paints, the kind you'd use on tabletop miniatures for Warhammer or the like. The light purple there is specifically a mix of Citadel Paints' "Liche Purple" and Vallejo Model Color's "Pink" in as close to a 1:1 ratio as I could manage. I just painted it directly on the plastic then gave her a quick pass with matte varnish to keep it on there.

I know exactly what you mean about the translucent facemask and the fear that holds you back. I guess my advice is to either buy the shiny new playarts fig for like $50 and just be happy with it, or spend $40 and buy two of this Tali so you have a spare if you screw up.

Best of luck with both of them, and don't worry too much about Garrus: Anything you do to that terrible sculpt/paint job can only improve it.

Hmm... Well, I don't have any model paints, but I do have a nice range of acrylic paints I might try out. Consider me inspired. You're right regarding Garrus, though. I don't think I could do a worse job than they did, poor guy.

I hadn't seen the photos of the PlayArts version of Tali before you mentioned her. They're doing a wonderful job with those figures... very tempting!
