Description Noctilucent clouds can be seen around mid-summer low in the north western sky, between altitudes of 50-70 degrees. They are the highest clouds located 40-50 miles in the atmosphere. They’re best seen when the sun is illuminating them from 5-15 degrees below the horizon, while the rest of the atmosphere is in the Earth’s shadow; hence seeing them in the summer.

A 25 second exposure taken with a Canon 350D with a 18mm lens @ ISO 100.

I was just browsing your gallery checking out some of the things I've missed and I almost died when I saw the title. After taking a meteorology course I learned about optical phenomena in the sky and I've been on the lookout for these ever since!!

I'm so happy you got a picture of 'em! They're simply gorgeous!! I really enjoy the fact that int he photograph the sky is so large and blue, while the city lights are tiny and red... such a wonderful contrast.

Argh, you spoiled it! I was going to ask 'nocti-whatty clouds?' , but you already explained it

Very nice shot though

How's tricks anyhow? Discovered any new bands lately? I'm still listening to all the old stuff, like Sigur Ros and Pearl Jam

quicksimon In reply to Metroboy [2009-06-20 18:14:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man...

Tricks are OK, thanks. How about you? You've been to download? The only 'new' band I really like are The Silversun Pickups. They're like Grunge/Indie. I saw them in Liverpool last year and going to watch them in July too. Pearl Jam are playing in Manchester in August. The day the tickets were on sale, I only remember in the afternoon, and they were sold out by then There's some on ebay, so I hope I'll be able to get a couple for an ok price. It'll be worth it though because I've been wanting to see them since I was 13. What dya think of Sigur Ros’ last album? It's not their best, I don't think, although the song translating as 'iano' is really good!! I prefer their 1st 3 albums, because they're the least commercial-sounding.

Heard any new bands yourself?

Yeah, I didn't think the new album was that great really, it isn't too bad though

No new bands for me lately, nothing that's really stuck anyway

No, I haven't seen that, thanks.

I just remembered, not really a new band, but I recently got into Seasick Steve. Been going for a while, but I saw him on a repeat of Jools Holland. He's rather good

Check Heima out man.. You'll really like it. Check out the song at Reyjavik..just awesome! Yeah, SSS is really cool. Can't believe he plays with 3 strings!!

Chickenfoot are pretty cool too, just got their album... Still, it'd be hard to mess up with Joe Satriani on guitar and the rest of the band drawn from Van Halen and Red Hot Chili Peppers

quicksimon In reply to Metroboy [2009-06-26 13:05:10 +0000 UTC]

I'll check them out man! Who is it from the Chilli's? Oh, thought of a band I've discovered. Explosions in the Sky, heard of them? They're an instrumental/shoegaze indie band... They did the soundtrack for the film 'Friday Night Lights' They're really cool man, but an acquired taste I would imagine. Oh talking of soundtracks.. Did you see the film Into the Wild? Eddie Vedder did the soundtrack. It's really cool. Nothing like Pearl Jam; really mellow and arty..

Metroboy In reply to quicksimon [2009-06-26 13:59:33 +0000 UTC]

The drummer, Chad Smith. They have the most annoying CD case ever though. It's heat sensitive & you have to heat it up with your hands to read the track listing!

Not heard of that band, I'm not really much of an indie man though, so that's probably why.

quicksimon In reply to Metroboy [2009-06-27 17:34:49 +0000 UTC]

No way that sounds crazy! I'll check them now. Forget I said Indie about explosions in the sky. It's hard to describe their style really. They can be atmospheric and really pumping! I think they're worth a look... here ya go man...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chrissyo In reply to quicksimon [2009-06-23 10:18:24 +0000 UTC]

I'm at about 27 degrees south. I don't really know if we can see them, I've never taken the time to learn much about the different types of clouds there are, and I don't really pay too much attention to them either.
