Description A derpy Chameleon MOC with a retractable tongue (and a fly that sticks to the end of it)!
As an experiment I kept a vlog that contains the entire process from ideas through to this deviation. It contains 87 clips and is over half an hour long in total, I'm afraid, but I didn't feel like cutting any of it down! You can view it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NeEhY…

Anyway, the inspiration behind this MOC consisted of the use of Mata Green pieces, a tongue that can be wrapped up and stored in the mouth, and making an animal whose eyes genuinely do point in different directions (thus justifying the use of googly eyes!). Even though these eyes are somewhat smaller than they should anatomically be, I did put rubber bands around each one to make it a little more integrated.
All in all I'm very happy with how this MOC turned out, and I hope you like it too!

Amazing. Makes me want to sort all my odd bionicle pieces by color.

I've considered that before. If there were a good way of making the neck open and shut then I'd definitely have a shot.

I admire your optimism, but history shows that only the traditional Lego brick sets get enough popularity on those sites

Yeah, the double-socket at the base of the tail. The lime pieces from that year were particularly brittle.

That's fucking awesome. So derpy looking, and actually still true to an actual Chameleon's shape. Plus a retractable tongue? How'd ya get that done?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rahiden In reply to SchnitzelMobile [2014-08-08 23:47:12 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, glad you like it. There's a green cross piece in the mouth cavity, and the tongue can be easily coiled up around that and stored in the mouth; it's shown in the first few minutes of the Behind The Scenes video (Also, do you think 'retractable' is the right word? Storable? Extendable?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SchnitzelMobile In reply to Rahiden [2014-08-09 00:09:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, retractable fits (lol) since a Chameleon generally "shoots" its tongue out of it's mouth at high speeds and then pulls it back anyway

Lewanut [2014-08-08 21:30:47 +0000 UTC]

That's awesome. Great shaping on the creature, and the colors are very well done. Not just the division of the greens, but the rich Mata brown of the tree as well (aside from a couple Metru brown parts). And that fly is hilarious. Did you already have the parts for that, or was that part of your Bricklink order? I'm too tired right now to properly gush, but you did a very good job on this one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rahiden In reply to Lewanut [2014-08-08 23:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it! The pieces for the fly were found entirely in my rarely-used System box - I think the wings were originally a plant of some sort, but I'm not sure. Notably the googly eyes and the tongue were the only two pieces that I knew I'd definitely use, so even though the lime tentacle, lime ball joints, and some Mata green technic pieces were a la Bricklink, none of them were bought specifically for this MOC.

dshayatopkmn In reply to Rahiden [2014-08-10 06:58:59 +0000 UTC]

Just so you know, I'm pretty sure the piece you used for the fly wings was originally a set of feathers that went on a Native American minifigs hat.

Rahiden In reply to dshayatopkmn [2014-08-12 20:24:49 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see! I actually found the piece on Bricklink shortly afterwards - turns out that I originally got it with the 'Draco's Encounter with Buckbeak' set www.bricklink.com/catalogItemI…

Aaaaah that poor tentacle ;-;

I don't like how flat the head is, but the rest is great. I've been wanting to make a chameleon with those eyes since the first day mixels were leaked!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rahiden In reply to st3vethesquid [2014-08-08 20:32:44 +0000 UTC]

I hereby apologise to the tentacle for twisting it so brutally and beautifully (the tail would probably look a but empty without it!). I now realise that the chameleon picture that I was working from had a somewhat flattish head, but having looked at Google Images it seems like their heads come in all degrees of pointiness!

You have no idea how happy this makes me. I recently got the pleasure of handling a Madagascar Blue chameleon while a friend was on vacation. I only got one or two successful pictures of it, but holding and watching it was a real pleasure. This pretty little MOC reminds me very much of it, and I would love to see what would happen if the blue I handled crossed paths with this XD great job

Oh. It was fun she really liked to climb up my arms. I let her onto a ficus tree nearby a lot, and when I tried to get her down she'd flatten out and change colors to try to scare me off. It was very entertaining XD

I once tried to have a parrot (the blue and yellow kind i think ) sitting on my arm when i were in Thailand in a elephant park.
Fed it pineapple wedges and even managed to make it say hello in its raspy voice.
It even squeezed the juice out of the wedges before eating the wedge itself. Parrots are a funny bird.
