I love that you're down in Vallamar getting alternately attacked by Carta and darkspawn and these two are chatting each other up while they're ducking behind cover.
Had fun drawing with regular graphite again. Still so smudgey though.
I also realized that I always draw Varric's face in this position. I think it's because I always picture him laughing, and I love drawing his dimples from this angle. I

Hahah I have an original character form my novel whom Varric would love just as much as Bianca if not more. While the idea of VarricxBianca is cute its just ... not workable in my storyline lol.

I don't even see them getting together honestly. This feels like one of those really difficult relationships where you love the person but you can't ever be with them. But when they're together their chemistry clicks.

i think this picture is so cute and heartwarming....it was a bit depressing to see how much more solemn varric had become after DA2 (can't blame him, but still) and it's just so nice to see him happy, even in fanart. i think you did a wonderful job

I love listening to his banter because he is so much more fun during that. I totally get the somber tone too though, Inquisition was tough for him.

I have been meaning to thank you for the critique! (both comments) You are so right about that background too, I always just erase everything in photoshop because I am so not into figuring out what goes behind the characters. Not to mention that when I work in graphite it is just a mess. That's why I've been using the red lead so faithfully.
I also always chicken out on going to dark with shadows. I am chronically delicate with all my art. I need to practice that more too.
I'm glad you like Bianca's expression because it was the one I was less confident in. That makes me feel better about it.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, you do a marvelous job! truly!! What I've been always thinking is what great potential you have -yet you tend to stick to preferred format.

I do, my teachers used to point that out a lot. I get very focused on mastering one thing at a time, so I sometimes miss the bigger picture, or possibilities for a more interesting composition. My focus has been communicating emotion and story with pure gesture and emotion, so I haven't thought at all about what sort of space the characters should be occupying (or coloring, or wardrobe, or anything else really.) It wasn't until I got to certain parts of the Cousland story that there were moments where the scene WAS best served by an environment.
I think I should look for some art prompts to get my wheels turning again. But I hate to get too sidetracked because my time is precious with a nearly 1 1/2 year old vying for my attention too!

Your teachers have a point. When I was accepted in art school (we were twelve out of more than 400) the teacher told us the first day. 'I suppose you think you had the best images -you didn't. However you had the best images where I could see a willingness to learn and change, that's why you're here.' Personally I hate prompts, at this I do this for pure fun and I salute you for managing with a toddler (myself I didn't draw for more than 10 years when my kids were small).

This is touching and sweet. I wish Varric had had such moments. The pencilwork is delicate, what you can do is stress the light and shadow a bit more. Love the expression in both faces, especially Bianca.

Haha, I didn't realize what a hot topic Bianca was until I started looking up references to draw her. I don't know enough about her to make a character judgement. I do appreciate how complicated the relationship is and that they only give you enough information in game to make guesses. (When I was looking up references I saw that they had her in the comic? Can I say how much I hate how they can't bring themselves to draw a stocky dwarf woman? Ugh.)
Anyway, I like that it's complicated and sad and I'm looking forward to even more of Varric's character growth. Because I wuv him.

From what I've seen, she's in the comic, but we don't see her. At one point our heroes get sucked into the Fade--because a Dragon Age adventure isn't complete without a trip to the Fade--and Varric talks to her, knowing that it's the Fade, and eventually lets her go.

I haven't read them either, but from what I've heard, they're really cool. They delve a lot more into the backstories for both Alistair and Isabela, has the first appearance of Sten as the Arishok, and ends up hinting at stuff we find out in Inquisition.
