.454 does seem to pack a good amount of superheated expanding gas, no?

That's kind of like calling the Pacific Ocean "kind of moist."

Uh, .50 Raging Bull? I assume you mean the .500 Mag round, or do you mean the .50 AE round?
Raging Bull is chambered in .500 Mag, [link]

Ah, the .500 Mag. Hope you reload, otherwise ammo costs will be a headache for ya.

If i were to own one of those it would be for collection purposes only (and have 5 rounds just in-case). A 10" silver beauty like that is simply irrestistable. That one is the worlds largest revolver right?

I've never been much for buying weapons just for cosmetic purposes. But to each their own. If you got the cash, and you want one for whatever reason, tis your business. I wouldn't own a weapon I never fired, but that's just my personal thing and I don't fault those that disagree with me on it.
The largest production handgun, I believe, is the Magnum Research BFR chambered in .45-70. This is of course, not counting the Contenders and such. But yea, Raging Bull chambered in .500 Mag is on up there.

Raging Bulls aren't that expensive to buy. Ammo is a bit pricey unless you reload.

Lots of people will claim "skill" when they get ueber-lucky. Everyone's done it, heck I have. I loaded my Barrett rifle with blanks, fired at a target from the standing. A Barrett weights 35 lbs unloaded. All my rounds hit within half an inch of each other, so it was more or less a big lopsided hole. Look very impressive to the foreign Armies. In reality, I had a buddy down the line shooting my target for me.

haha really? that's pretty cool. yea the only kind of gun i've ever shot off is a paintball gun and a crossbow...other than that. eh. i might be going with adam to his friends farm for a few days or so sometime so i'll end up shooting a rifle there...what's it like though?

Firearms are an important civil liberty in addition to being fun. Additionally, the police are not legally obligated to protect you individually. You are responsible for your own safety. If you live in a state with Concealed Carry Permits, I recommend getting one when you can.

mmmmh interesting...yea i can but not yet. too young, anyways i have enough knives to protect myself...then there's a metal bat too..those things are awesome in their own way. i have an old crossbow that use to work really well but for some reason now it doesn't. and i have a paintball gun, might not kill anyone but man is it fun. I dunno though, the only thing i would be afraid of is when i have kids. I don't think i'm going to keep a gun in the house, you know what i mean?

Knives are nice for some circumstances. I usually carry one myself. Usually for opening boxes or whatnot. I prefer an asp over a bat. An asp is a telescoping security baton.
As for guns and kids, it's how you raise them. I know many families that train their children in firearm safety, and teach their children how to properly use firearms. Their answer is generally that they love their children enough to protect them.

yea i carry one with me most of the time...
yea that's understandable, but there are always other ways of protecting yourself and your children without having a gun in the house. alot of times kids will play around, because there so young, and end up hurting themselves or someone else. Well i don't have kids yet so i don't worry about it just yet. That will wait for a while.

Sure, there are always ways to protect yourself. Being aware of one's surroundings is much more important than any weapon. Still, when it comes to self defense, firearms are typically the best means. To each their own.
Indeed, you have a while.

Distance is just another variable. At 1m, a firearm is more of a burden than a tool. At 5m, it's a trump card.

.454 is a large round. Lots of powder to burn. However, all revolvers have a similiar characteristic in their expanding gasses. One needs to be rather careful, or you can get burned.

revdisk In reply to Metal-Storm [2004-12-23 20:35:02 +0000 UTC]
I usually thumb lock. I'm right handed. Right hand goes on grip. Left hand, I put the fingers over the right hand's fingers, and my left thumb goes over my right thumb. It's kind of required for heavy caliber pistols.

Yep. Expanding gas. This is obviously exagerated beyond a normal revolver, but the expanding gas works the same way with all revolvers.
