I can tell Bass is far more interested at charging at X than playing the gameXD And you did awesome work choosing Vile as the "game point keeper and maybe even judge msot likely giving X yellow and red cards for small msitakesXD"

You're welcome. I noticed.
Though, it's to my understanding that MMX came out for the SNES late in 1993. Interestingly, it wasn't given a US release until somewhere in the spring of 1994. But I guess some of us fans could think of it as both a 1993 and a 1994 game.

Yeah, I can't honestly remember game release dates from way back then (amazing how the net has changed our anticipation for release dates nowadays), but I know there are some contrasting US dates online. I know I got my copy of X soon after it came out, but absolutely no clue what month it was. Haha.
But for this, I was sticking towards Japanese dates, seeing how they are the technical 'birthdates.'

I agree; the internet sure has changed the way the world as we knew it. But I assure you, most of what I remember is based off of memory. But some of it is from collected data that I've gathered from various online sources. But I'm definitely aware of the games' original release dates. I was also aware that MMX wasn't released to the US until early in 1994, but I didn't purchase my own copy of it until like the summer. And as soon as I started playing it, I noticed that the copyright date said 1993.

Nope, not quite Gamma. It's the annoying goalie midboss from Strike Man's stage in 10. No real alterations to it's design at all. Even if it did feel like a Gamma head tribute all along.

You drew this whole thing with a mouse? That's... really not a good idea. Not only does it create wobbly lines as you struggle to draw smooth curves, but you don't get the proper variation in line thickness without pen pressure. The background is rubbish; the terrain is severely overarched and the grass pattern doesn't match the curve. There's no reason why Vile should be standing horizontal on a tilted area of the terrain. The composition is just as disappointing. Enemies pepper the image, but they seem small and spread too thin. Even the proportions are messed up - just look at how tiny Sheep Man is compared to the goal! It's impossible to tell where Phantom is in space, because his shadow has the same size and distance as Bass', but he's much bigger than Mega Man in the foreground. Complete or not, this image is a mess in just about every area. It wouldn't stand a better chance at winning than the version you sent UDON.

While I don't really have any defense to your critiques, because I truly do agree mostly, I feel I have to at least post something after taking that beating.
Of course I would have preferred not to have used a mouse on such a large canvas size, but I have no real tablet experience and had no choice but to draw that big, due to the rules. All of my oekakis and a lot of my art is done mouse-only. I at least can cheat a little with beizer tools in oekaki, but I have none with my photo program. I don't have access to Photoshop or its ilk, I still use an ancient Adobe product from the '90's known as PhotoDeluxe. So any talk about pen pressure and it's proper use is basically foreign to me. When I ink on paper with any pen, it typically looks jagged and uneven after scanning at that high DPI, so I did my best to digitally ink in this instance for cleaner lines.
With no arching tools available, I pretty much gave up trying to create a clean, curved grass pattern, despite some attempts. You can see how the midfield and goal lines turned out, obviously. I at least could get fairly straight lines for a pattern, so I went with it.
The enemies are spread too thin, because I never got everything I wanted to in it. I had more of an actual stadium background in mind, but couldn't accomplish any of it in time. And I probably don't have much drive to go back and really work on it any more to my liking, either.
Proportion and distance has never been my forte, as you can see throughout my gallery. I know it doesn't help when each character was drawn separately, and then collaged together before I attempted the background. That's why Vile is as flat as he is. But that's typically how I've created larger images, by piecing together multiple images as separate layers.
I know it's flawed, and I know I suck, but I still feel that this version at least is at least remotely comparable to some of the entries that did make it into the Tribute book. Even if I'm not a big fan of some people's styles or images that made it in there, I never would say they shouldn't have stood a chance at making it in there. Regardless, I wanted to submit something for this book to show my passion for the characters/series, even if I couldn't do what I had hoped to create. I would be more disappointed in myself if I didn't try.
I wish I had the tools and talent you do, but I don't. And unfortunately, as I've gotten older, I just have less and less time to really practice or improve. My drawings are just something for fun, to hopefully give some people a smile, and act as an outlet to get some ideas out of my system. Sometimes, a relief from the stress of work, even if it is merely more work in a way. I know I'll never be anything special, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try to enjoy what I pump out, even if it's not remotely 100% aesthetically pleasing.
I appreciate and understand the critique. Not so much the feeling of anger you have towards it.

glitcher In reply to RockMiyabi [2011-08-05 23:36:09 +0000 UTC]
Dammit, I knew I used the wrong smilie. It's not meant to represent anger, only displeasure for all the reasons listed above. At least I'm happy you're handling it more maturely than other artists I've criticised who respond with brattish insults.
I find it hard to believe that inking with a pen is more uneven that a mouse. A pen moves more freely, whereas resting your hand on a mouse gives you those wobbly lines I mentioned. I only use a mouse to trace with the Pen tool in Photoshop, so that can be an alternative. Considering how widespread Photoshop's availability is, it doesn't take much effort to get hold of a copy. Failing that, GIMP is free to download, which I hear is the next best thing.
In your description, you said that this image taxed your computer system. Considering there's not an awful lot of detail in this pic, I think the problem is caused by the grain in the grass, which increases the file size exponentially. (Grain is something I try to avoid for that reason alone.) By using flat colours, your computer will be more responsive and you can add more characters.
I'm glad you enjoyed working on this, but passion alone won't garner recognition. Practice hard and look up tutorials to teach you mad skillz.

RockMiyabi In reply to glitcher [2011-08-06 05:20:34 +0000 UTC]
S'alright. As I said, I have no problem with someone trying to give critique, as long as it's trying to be constructive. And I really do appreciate the honesty, even if I might be coming across differently to you as you read this.
But at the same time, I'm someone who had no real art schooling, have weaker tools, and am running an older computer on Windows ME with a small 120 GB HD...which in reality is much closer to 60GB. It is what it is right now, until I can afford to and find the need upgrade things.
The grain was nothing but a mere effect; having 20+ layers is moreso what killed my memory and caused it to freeze up. Layers eat up memory quick in PhotoDeluxe.
Also hard to get much time to practice and devote time to brushing up on tutorials when you're working 45-60 hours a week, as much as I'd love to. :/
Again, I don't draw for pure recognition. It's nice to be noticed and to hear some praise from time to time, but I really don't give a damn about the popularity. It's never going to be a career for me, it's just an outlet for some of my creativity.
BTW, my copy of the Tribute arrived today. Wonderful idea for your pic, it looks quite great!

You know, it probably would have been better, if you focused more on fleshing out the details, and NOT on throwing in so much needless crap in there. Even if you started on it late, it could have been glorious I bet.
But hey, I like this either way (especially Forte's expression) but it's just a real shame you didn't get in.
Sorry if I seemed like a dick in this comment. : P

No worries, I know you're not trollin'. You're just your usual honest self.
Seriously, I started a week before the deadline. When I had, what, nearly two months? And then even with an extra week, I was only able to submit the version I linked on Imageshack. The needless crap was more of an afterthought on the last day, and as you may see, there are gonna be enough winners in the book with massive amounts of needless, hardly visible cameo characters/items. SO I HAD TO TAKE THAT ROUTE, TOO! LOL, I just didn't cram enough of them in, right?
Thank ya, sir.

WEll I didn't enter the contest for two main reasons.
First, I suck.
Second, I really suck.
That aside, I didn't like the idea from udon since the beginning because it was doomed to get only "perfect" work from fans; you know, the kind of piece normal people dream of making in 50 years or something. You know, with texture, a bajillion colors, and stuff like that
So it wasn't really "open" to all fans.
And I really lost respect to it when staff members have posted their own stuff in the book. You know the guy who did lilformers? Have you even seen his piece? well I love the guy and lilfromers, but why the heck is his piece in the book when other fans I know have made better pieces and didn't get in the book. Well, that's because he's staff, and it was quite unfair to fans I belive. sheesh
I've seen sme pieces that were far from perfect, but that shuold really have made it to the book, simply because they were "tributes". Something made from deep love for the series, which by the way isn't that stellar. See my point?
So yeaah, I have all respect to people who tried to get in the book, even if they did'nt make it in.
And if you read till this, I think your piece is really funny and smart! Like that referree there!

First, you don't. Second, you really don't. Third,...well, I forgot my third.
Yeah, we all knew that there was going to be some type of favoritism and bias in the judging, it's hard not to. As far as Matt Moylan's entry being in there, I may agree his art style isn't exactly the grandest of the UDON team, but if anything, then it gave hope to the younger kids and the Photoshop-challenged like me that maybe our lesser talents had a shot at making the book. I believe there was a craft/plush entry that made the book, and some vector art that I didn't find really all that super, but still neat enough that it made it over more technical pieces.
We knew from the start there was going to be a fixed amount of pages given to UDON crew artists, it was no different from the other UDON Tribute books. So while I agree that it might not look fair based on talent or style, we knew it wasn't going to be a fan-only book. And Capcom also had some say over rejecting some pieces chosen by UDON by the sounds of things, too.
Of course I read all the way! Thank you very much, my dear.
