LEGAL NAME:

Marianna Di Mauro. ( MAH-ree-ahn-NAH dee MAH-roh )

Marianna is a popular name in Sicily, and holds much relevance to her given the fact that is a religious name, which is would tie in with religious consistency in Sicily, which is, some can argue, one of the more religious parts of Italy, though Italy itself is very Catholic, Sicily is, in a way, compared to the rest, much more so, but not indefinitely or to all of it. Most Sicilians are very devout and attend church regularly, and this is even noticeable in the Sicilian youth. Marianna is combined of the names “Maria”, and “Anna” ( Mary and Anne ), two very religious female names, given they are after the Virgin Mary, and her mother, Saint Anne. Her faith to her religion (although she has not always been Catholic) is one of the reasons she has kept this name for so long, as well as it being the name she has had basically all her life, though not always in it’s current Italian form. It is also common in Southern Italy, including Sicily, that children are named after saints.

Di Mauro is a popular Sicilian surname. As is common among Sicilian surnames, it is a patronymic surname, meaning “descendant of Mauro” ( or simply, directly translated, “of Mauro” ). While this name is far from being her father’s name, the name Mauro means “Moor”, or “North African”, which would go directly to her ancestry having to do with parts of Sicilian history. The Moors inhabited Sicily in the Middle Ages, and are also related to the Christian converts from Islam in the Iberian peninsula ( which later would effect Sicily’s Catholicism through Spain ). The Moors had been in Sicily for a while, and due to this for hundreds of years Marianna had been Islamic, and practiced Islam. Though it was short-lived compared to both times, currently, and before the Moors, that Marianna was / is Catholic.

CONFIRMATION NAME:

Lucia. ( loo-CHEE-ah )

Lucia is after Santa Lucia, the patron saint of Sicily, who is also celebrated currently during the holidays given she is a very important, worshipped saint on the island. The name itself is very popular in Sicily, for obvious reasons stated above, and because of this it is her confirmation name, one recognized only by the Catholic church, and therefore not a part of her legal name. She has it to celebrate Saint Lucy of Syracuse, who is said to have saved Sicily from the famine of 1582, on her feast day, when ship carrying grain arrived at the harbor. Saint Lucy’s patronage also lies with writers, which is one of Marianna’s many interests (given it is one of the many reflections of Sicily’s culture), and possible profession.

NICKNAME/ALIAS[ES]:

Mari [ preferred ], Maria.

Mari, shortened form of Marianna, a common nickname for her. Also can be coincidental play on words, since “mari” means “sea” in Sicilian, and Sicily’s connection to the sea is an important one.

PHYSICAL AGE:

Physically 26-27.

COUNTRY AGE:

2,800+

Sicily is one of the older regions of Italy, in reality it’s dates going back around 10000+ years, and even with the more modern indigenous peoples of SIcily, with the Elymians, and the Sicani, Sicels and Siculi, goes back to perhaps around 3000 BCE or further. Despite this, I have chosen to make Marianna’s age go back to around 9th-8th century BCE, with the Phoenicians and the Greeks. Phoenicians had originally settled in 11th century BCE, but Greeks only first came in 8th century BCE to settle. This means that Marianna was born around 2,800 years ago, to her father Phoenicia, and her mother Ancient Greece.

Why I have chosen these two to be her parents, and for Rome to not be blood related to her is very simple: Greeks and Arabic ( Phoenicia, Moors ) date back further, and have had a long-lasting influence on Sicily that is noticeable throughout it’s history several times. Examples can be with the Theme of Sicily ( θέμα Σικελίας - Thema Sikelias ), a Byzantine-Greek miltary province in Sicily, which had followed the Muslim conquest of Sicily, which was a part of the Muslim conquests as well as the Arab-Byzantine wars, which has an effect on Sicily, and ties into the Arab traders that had a presence on the island.

Rome’s rule lasted 600 years, but still, it had only begun in 200 BC, far too young for Sicily’s long, rich history. Rome did not have as heavy of an effect as did the Arabs and Greeks, but it does have notable things, such as the latifundia, which later, in the 19th century,  were incorporated into what gabelloti ( associated with the mafia, or members of ) used to profit from peasants, who would be in debt to the gabelloto, and worked on the estate often with farming. This, however, is not a strong point, and is very negative, especially considering these men were associated with the mafia, if not a part of it already, and were hated by the majority of the Sicilian people when they did exist.

It also often speculated that Sicily contributed to Roman culture, rather than vice versa. So I would believe it is obvious why I choose to make them not related. He would be more of step-father, an adopted father, given Phoenicia’s death would have happened around 300 years before Rome’s gaining of the region, and considering that it is around ( though a little before ) the time that Phoenicia dies, that Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome have given birth to her half-brother, Romano. So in reality, Rome would be her stepfather.

BIRTHDATE/ZODIAC:

May 15th, 1946 | Taurus.

May 15th, 1946 is not her date of birth, such a thing would be nearly impossible for me to even know, and in terms of her, she is too old to remember her father’s face, let alone her own date of birth. May 15th is the day celebrated, though it is not a holiday, it is the day that Sicily was declared an autonomous state of Italy, something Sicilians take pride in to this day.

GENDER/SEX:

Biologically female. She/her.

While others could argue, it is my opinion that Sicily is a very feminine place, and not in the sense of “traditionally” feminine, but rather that Sicily is a very strong, independent place, despite being a part of a country, it’s autonomy and history of being separate from the mainland has given it an independent spark, and in general Sicilian women are strong and independent as well, successful, and beautiful and talented. One of many things I can use to help me support myself in this is the famous Godfather quote, “In Sicily, women are more dangerous than a shotgun”. As well as the many famous Sicilian women that come to mind.

SEXUAL PREFERENCE:

Heterosexual heteroromantic.

As mentioned before, Sicily has a very solid religious consistency. Even a large amount of it’s youth can be considered devout. Though, this does not have as big of an effect on others in Italy as I am very aware of, it is just that in Sicily, it is almost “unheard of” to be gay. It is not that Sicilians are all close-minded, or against LGBT+, it is just that it is not very common there. That does not mean LGBT+ peoples in Sicily do not exist, I just felt that it would be more logical to keep Marianna straight. Despite this she is not closeminded, not in the slightest, especially given that a lot of her family is non-straight, and even so I still land Marianna as a one on the kinsey scale, meaning she does have potential to date females. At best, she is heteroflexible.

RELIGION:

Devout Roman Catholic.

The Catholic church still plays an important role in the lives of most Sicilians, and Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion in the region, so it is no wonder that she herself is Catholic. She is devout herself, and still attends church. Even so, she is open about other religions, considering she had been converted to and from Islam, and grew up with Phoenicia and Ancient Greece with their differing religious views, and eventually had been apart of the Roman empire.

OCCUPATION:

Author, and farmer.

Marianna lives in the rural area of Syracuse, Sicily, and there she lives alone in her house, which has a small farm with it. This is one of her ways she makes money, and otherwise makes her money of the books she writes. Sicilian writers are very notable and, writing in general is a very big part of Sicilian culture.

++ more to come i'm very lazy ++
