This is wonderful but the step by step is very vague...
Also, I have the free version of Sai and some brushes I don't have at my disposal, any suggestions?

I dont know if youve already solved this, but if you dont know, the creator of this tutorial has things on how to get different effects with the "Brush" tool, which might be helpful for you

How to draw skin, okay. So, what brushes did you use? Self-made brushes perhaps? Did you employ the use of layers, or luminosity? If so, where, and at what step?
I appreciate what you're doing here, and it certainly looks very nice. However, without explanation or further guidance, there's very little to be learned here. It does, however, look very good.

I'm sorry, what you think it, so I just said my opinion, based on what other artists similar views, such as tutorials step by step (step by step gives explanations of it all, with regular tutorial that gives details and information, what the artist is doing, but still there are various explanations of the tutorial, with each artist has over the various ways to display them),...,In one word nothing bad I did not say.

You didn't say anything bad, I simply dislike it when people expect a tutorial to always be a certain way.
It's fine that you have your opinion on what a tutorial is, but It's simply my opinion that you're far too picky with what you consider to be a tutorial. From my point of view, anything made with the intention of showing how to do something is a tutorial; whether Its an incredibly effective one is another story.

tutorial that is, it is, for those who know and can affect the process of drawing without explanations of, for those who do not know, this is a tutorial, but not entirely, but step by step (try to write on deviantART Browser Search "step by step "and you'll see what i mean ... there's nothing you do not like what other people think, because you certainly do not feel a maliciously or misunderstood messages, there is such a thing.As I said, there are various tutorials, it all depends on how they the artist, show them. Or, in this case, there are video tutorials, the media over the Internet, for example. you tube. And while there is a "livestram" live program, where viewers can watch live as the artist is painting and drawing.

you may have a better listing if you have not yet figured out (this is the last comment , I hope you figure it out ) , I said that there are various artists put into their work if it is a tutorial , with or without explanations of , its very artistic work ( reasons for this are many, some artists of his sketches and the process of drawing and coloring, giving the show some , not their art, whether it comes to tutorials , step by step , or WIP process , and there is a third kind of teasing question of how he did it, so it turned out , the artist appears in some pictures my work process again but do not understand how this is achieved , because you 've to try and did not like, or at least a little like that , . .. , those artists I can not stand, but again I admire what they are creating a work of art ) . Nothing I did not confuse you , but we're both right in their own way

:/ unlike some of the comments, I don't find this very helpful, and shouldn't be a "how-to/tutorial" since you describe absolutely nothing in the progress..
what did you use? why did you do that? what was the effect and why does skin act like that?
not even a brush pack or something in your description saying "here's what i use for skins, now have fun" or something like that...
if it's the result of a video tutorial you recorded, then where is the link?
I'd rather call this "progress for skin" instead of "how to draw skin"... a little bit of explanation goes a long way.

i find tutorials like this very helpful
if you get too detailed on how you draw something than people who learn from it are just copying you
with something like this, it has some gray areas that you can put your own art skill and abilities in as a substitute and you can make it your own
that's how i see it anyway

Learning from progress is good, i never said it wasn't, but this can't be called a tutorial as a "tutorial" are supposed to explain stuff, not just show it and say "okay now figure it out your way"
Progress shots are good to show how you work and what was the step you did without having to explain WHAT you did and why.
usually the tutorial will say you can do "this" because of "that", ex: if the light source in on top you won't put the shadow on top of the sphere.

I agree. I think the tutorials released by this user suffer very strongly from the step-by-step tutorial problem that seems to be an issue in the art community, especially the online art community. But you also see this problem in every 'How to Draw' book at the art store. Learning to paint and draw isn't a 1-2-3 process. You have understand the underlying concepts about light, color, human anatomy, attention detail etc. before you can draw like this. But so many tutorials completely ignore, or very briefly gloss over these core concepts and skip right ahead to the 1-2-3. I used to read how to draw tutorials on deviantart every day for two years and never saw any improvement in my art. It wasn't until I took a figure drawing class that I could I was proud of what I could draw. I improved more in those 2 months than I had in the past 2 years because someone was finally teaching me those core concepts.

yea but once you look outside of the "how to draw" you can find some decent books that give tips and methods instead of steps.
at any rate this doesn't look very skin like to me. i can tell it's supposed to be but something just seems off to me.

I wasn't knocking all drawing and painting books. It's just the ones that start with "How To" tend to fall into the step by step trap the most. For example, my favorite art book I own is called "Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter." Note: no "how to paint color and light." As for the skin ball looking off, there isn't a lot of color variation. Human skin isn't like doll skin it isn't a consistent tone throughout. There are a lot more purples and greys in skin then the skin ball represents. But when you're drawing a skin ball it's hard to get the variation needed to make skin look life like, because the color variations are usually indicated by areas of shadow, areas of light, areas where there are clusters of blood sells just beneath the skin and etc. They did an okay job with texture, but the texture is so exaggerated to get the point across it comes off as scaley to some people.

i know, i was agreeing with you about the books. that said my favorite basic anatomy book is actually "how to draw and paint anatomy." apparently i got the smaller of the two versions but it gives good information about the form without giving more than you really need to know. i wouldn't really recommend anyone stop with just the book but it would be enough for people to do alright without anything else. it isn't a step by step thing though.
i tend to put back any book i find that has a large portion of step by step stuff unless there's some good write up about the steps to actually give decent information into the reasoning and know how of the step.
ah yea that's it. lack of different hues and the textures being too hard.

That was my thought. If this is a tutorial, it's kind of lousy. Neat to look at process, but it shows nothing about brushes, opacity, brush setting, layers, anything like that. Also nothing about shadows or different types or colors of skin. This looks like the skin of a pissed off dinosaur. I figure it's obviously a close up, but it's not much help.
Lousy tutorial, if you ask me. Cool painting progress, but lousy tutorial.

from what it looks like it is normal brushes, just altered.

But that means they're altered brushes as opposed to normal or preset ones.

Yeah, but the difference is, is that instead of DLing a speckled brush, you can make it in like 2 seconds. so it would be a preset circle, it looks oval ish, so they probably squished it a little, then put the scatter option on. at least thats one method of doing it. you could as i said, get or buy an already altered brush instead of making it yourself. however i find that takes up space on my computer and id rather make my own brushes (unless someone has really cool ones, but even then, i rarly use them. just mess with them.). but they are presets... just think of it this way, presets all dressed up. haha. i mean you are you whether you are nakid or clothed, right? the only difference are the clothes, lol.

I have no idea what you mean by your "nakid" versus clothed analogy. That said, you're right about messing with brushes. I need to do that, but that doesn't make this tutorial any more helpful.

So for the texturing of the skin what do you use specifically? looks like an airbrush on sphere 3, then a soft/medium brush
