Classic AE 2.5.3 Start Menu Skin for Classic ShellNote: This was completed around the time of Classic Shell 3.6.6 release. It may be buggy with current 4.x release. When I have time, I might update it. Check the Classic Shell archive for 3.6.6 version if you wish. [link]
Windows Classic style start menu skin for users of Classic AE 2.5.3 visual style and Classic Shell Start Menu.
Two variations:
- 3D Menus - for standard Classic AE and alternate menus (AM).
- Flat Menus - for Classic AE flat menus (FM) and alternate flat menus (AFM).
Options include "Caption" or "No Caption" with large or small icons.
Under "Start Menu Style" in Settings for Classic Shell Start Menu, there are two configurations:
- Windows Classic - traditional single column main menu.
- Windows XP, Windows Vista/Windows 7 - expanded single column main menu with user folders.
Tip: This menu performs best when selecting either "No animation" or "Slide" option for Main menu animation in General Behavior for Settings. [Settings > General Behavior > Main menu animation]
Also included in the Extras folder:
- Custom start buttons for Classic Start Menu Settings.
Note: These buttons are only for use with Classic Start Menu Settings, not for patching explorer.exe.
- Up buttons for Classic Explorer Settings.
Default (modified for Classic AE, which fixes a transparency issue) and up folder icon style.

The readme is pretty clear if you are familiar with Classic Shell.
Extract the "Classic AE 2.5.3.skin" file to the Skins subfolder in Classic Shell's installation directory.
Open Classic Start Menu Settings, under "Skin" tab, choose Classic AE 2.5.3. There you can also customize the menu under "Skin Options". You can also change the menu style under "Start Menu Style" tab.
Extract the 2.5.3 Extras folder to same Classic Shell installation directory if you want to use a custom Classic AE start button for Classic Start Menu Settings, or the Up Buttons for Classic Explorer Settings.
