Description
As Rock8rock said “More droids would be cool.” so here you go:
---
The Asphalt Paving Droid was used for construction works of roads that tired, tracked or hovering vehicles would be able to use much smoother even while driving with hovercraft of various size and kind. It was capable to prepare an area for paving roads or other ground plates like parking lots for vehicles, landing space for ships of all sizes and even the foundations upon which some of the smaller housed or other buildings were erected, yes not even roads, bu bridges as well. Part of it could flatten the terrain beforehand, while the next part would implement the Asphalt and the back of it would compact it with a roller or hammering plate depending on the type of Asphalt Paving Droid. While some of these vehicles could be crewed and used by an organic and droid driver and crew, many especially in the Outer Rim were automatized to save additional costs and let them run around the clock to get as much work done as quick as possible, especially in connecting newly build mining, industrial and colonial areas on countless worlds. With th beginning of the Clone Wars however, these Asphalt Paving Droids (APD) were reused for other tasks, as suddenly the roads and bridges they build carried supply, the lots they flattened would serve as the ground for Separatist bases, bunkers and other major installations and on some worlds of the Outer Rim these droids among others worked restless to ensure that new droid factories were build alongside these other facilities to gather successors, workforce or secure either of those. Because of this the Asphalt Paving Droids, despite being civil in nature became a major part of the Separatist War Effort early on in the Clone Wars, when the Separatist Alliance was building up it’s local forces and defenses to hold out against Republic and later Imperial invasion and attacks against their autonomy and freedom. In this role the Asphalt Paving Droids were quit important and their number in the Rim, were normal workforce or even regular labor droid forces were often rare or not in sufficient enough numbers.
Because of these works they were quickly the target of Republic special forces, like Arc Troopers or Republic Commandos, as well as their later Imperial equivalents, as the sabotage of Droid Factories, overall Separatist Industries and Infrastructure became essential for the Galactic Republic to long-term even stand a chance in the Clone Wars. For the very same reason these Asphalt Paving Droids themselves sometimes received additional armor plating and like some other civil cars, trucks and machinery in front-line worlds some even got upgrades in form of a small blaster gun, canon, or pint-defense turret of sorts to better secure and defend themselves against ambushes or similar attacks when nearby zones of conflict. Some Separatist Commanders meanwhile would even use them as additional front-line forces, heavily increasing their frontal and partly sideways armor plates so they could accompany organic and droid infantry, or even other vehicles in clearing a path trough enemy minefields, trenches and bunkers alike, as their rollers and hammers were quit durable and nondestructive because of the simple fact they sometimes had to be worked in harsh worlds or withstand unsafe natural and environmental dangers especially in the wilder worlds of the Rim. Because of this capabilities, they were soon seen as a dangerous assets in the hands of some Separatist Commanders. Build by the Cooperate Alliance, the Commerce Guild and the Trade Federation as well as various subsidiaries of those, these vehicles and droids also came in a large variety, but most shared a at least similar basic design and function. It was however very clear that the different worlds and environments often called for specializations of those vehicles, leading to some range in how they worked and were operated. This as well as construction cost soon lead to a cooperation of the various conglomerates to produce similar models with exchangeable parts so they could be replaced if damaged, or readjusted easily if needed. At the same time the Separatist Conglomerates would charge immense prices for replacing their product with parts not made for it, or End the guarantee if this happened, the same way they would attempt to implement their parts on all other rivaling variants, often leaving the customer with immense costs for doing so as there was little to no alternative on many Rim Worlds, especially in the Mid Rim and Outer Rim.
