My favorite character ever, Ryu from Street Fighter....Alternate Costume version! Noticed my new icon? This was one of several unused alt costumes that was shown in a SSFIV artbook released in Japan not too long ago. I remember seeing Akiman draw him years ago with a beard and long hair and I've always wanted to see a older Ryu like this.....sucks that the SSFIV art staff drew many awesome alts and won't use it. I started this about 2 months ago when I saw the art of Ryu's alts. Sadly, I didn't work on it steadily since CPS3 colors are such a pain to learn properly....had to work on it on and off. I have several sprites(about 3) that are left unfinished because I wanted to color it like SF3....I'm just glad this one finished and turned out pretty well compared to my C.Viper or my ugly colored Gouken.
Lineart took about 40-50 mins and the rest was just coloring it like a CPS3 sprite......such beautiful colors yet such a pain to learn. I tried mimicking the SF3 style as best of my ability and referenced several characters from Ryu, Alex, Urien and Makoto. SF3 anatomy is awesome.....it teaches you a lot of things if you wanted to learn exaggerated styles like Capcom's. Overall this sprite was a huge pain but I looooove it.....definitely one of my fav sprites I've made so far!
Ryu is from Street Fighter and belongs to Capcom.....CAPGOD.

I guess I wasn't the only one who notice those lovely Alt costumes (THAT THEY DIDNT USE 
Me and a few DA artists pretty much got a boner to see that Ikeno's Alt costume designs resembled our ideas too.
This is one step ahead, I love that you did this. This is the one lat that stood out most for me. Even within the first week of the artbook page scan being released, people started doing fanart of this version.
I always imagined Ryu with a beard when he gets older. It just makes sense.

Yeah, I noticed a lot of people doing artwork of this version of Ryu around art places like Pixiv and stuff. Glad to see people wanna see a older Ryu like we do!!!

Haha yes! Ever since SF4 was announced (before they said it was going to be a prequel to SF3) I thought that we'd see an older Ryu. I've been drawing older versions of Ryu and have maybe over 100 sketches.

Exactly! I'm pretty sure if they do a SFV years from now, it'll be a SFIII sequel. Hopefully by then, they have and older Ryu and company!

Yes please feel free to post up any alternate sketches of Ryu you had. I live for that kind of stuff, especially when the fan knows where the character is coming from.
Aha yes it will be very "Cheap" if Capcom makes SF5 another game between SF2 and SF3. Be bold and move ahead!

Sure thing man! I don't draw much nowadays but I do make animations here and there and since your a fellow Ryu fan, I'ma show you a really really early and unfinished animation. Basically it's Ryu doing an EX Gou Hadoken like Gouken....though the animation is a slightly different from Gouken. Probably add a regular Hadoken in there too haha.

Wow it looks more forceful than Gouken's. The way he pushes into it. Very nice! I love this kind of stuff. Anything you want to show me, I'm always good to see that stuff. It sucks when great work goes un-appreciated.

Yes! For sure. I'm definitely sure we're some sort of Ryu freaks. I sent something to Capcom's fan page. So hopefully they'll post it. I'll let you know what it is if it works out
Ryu is definitely my favorite too. I can't believe how he's affected my life and many others too. I hope his character never dies and fades.

Yeah, Mitsurugi. This version of Ryu is very old though, it was just never fully drawn till SSFIV came out.

Ryu has remained almost unchanged for the most part, and Capcom made some very appropriate looking alternate outfits for him-- this being one of them. I would've loved to seen a Ryu who looks as old as he really is (from what I heard and seen, Capcom removed all birth dates from their characters) and this definitely makes Ryu look like he has seen the world and been unkempt for so long.
And to think, Capcom gave him this Gangsta apparel for an alternate costume.
Oh well, I like this one better.

Yeah, I think a lot of people wanna see older Ryu that takes place after SF3. And wow didn't know Capcom removed the birthdates for them...I still remember him being born on 1964, The Year of the Dragon. Dude should be 46 as of now and this or some of the other alts would fit him well.

You don't know any import shops over there? If not, you can always order online at places like Play-Asia or YesAsia. That's for the Japanese version though since it isn't released in English yet.

well if you have the pc version of SF4 you can modify some of the characters to have different costumes, i think i remember seeing something similar to this but cant be sure

Said to say I cosplayed the Doo rag Ryu. Pretty much as a joke. I called him 50 Cent Ryu. I wonder what Capcom is smoking. It's very rare that they impress us wildly with the Alt Costumes. Only Ryu alt I liked was his shirt blasted off one which I think Capcom has drawn a few times. The "Geese Howard" samurai outfit wasn't samurai enough to me. "Oh look Ryu got new pajamas/hakamas"

I honestly think this new set of alts is the best one yet. Ryu definitely got the shaft but you can't help but love the new Dudley. Of course I don't plan on paying for costumes (again) so I'll only get to use these new ones at tournaments/casuals.

I think some characters got great alts in a bad set. Like Blarog got an amazing alt, but the same batch for other characters (Alt 2 I believe) looks weird.
It's usually hit or miss. The artbook alts are amazingly within character. Dunno why they got shafted

Yeah, a lot of people haven't seen some of the SSFIV concept art yet. They have unused costumes on all the characters and many of them are pretty badass/awesome. I think Capcom and Udon is translating the Artbook right now and it'll be released in a few months I think....I want it now though lol.

Wow. This is actually MORE badass than the original design. Usually, they just look really lame (well, not including Cody, who's original costume from Final Fight looks lame compared to the prison outfit he has in SF3)

Yeah, I love Ryu's classic design! After all these years though, I'd like to see an older version of him similar to this. Hopefully in a few more years if SFV ever comes out, I hope they change him a bit.

We can only hope. I'm personally getting sick of seeing the SAME exact designs over and over! Although, they (obviously) should offer the classic versions for a different outfit/costume.
