Dude, this is totally awesome. How did you carve it? Just a knife and patience?

soupcan13 In reply to FlashbackPractice [2011-08-26 16:16:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you! Well.....im not saying you couldnt do that....but I for one dont have the patience. I use a rotary tool(dremel), files, and sandpaper to get the job done. The old school guys used to use hand files, chisels, and way way back they used to use tools made from rats teeth (hardest cutting tool they had available)

thanks! will we ever get to see some from you? your work is so awesomely detailed it would be cool to see how you go about setting up all the framing/wire twisty awesomeness....unless that would give away trade secrets

Maybe one of these days. I've not had much luck, mostly because all my fingers are in usage at all times, but I do have a tree tutorial on my list of things to do. Though that may or may not happen soon, since apparently they first cut my class suggestion, then brought it back at too short a time to actually teach it...

thanks my fellow carver! Hmmmmmm ive gotten a couple requests....im gonna have to look into get my hands on some....right now ive got more cattle bone, some birds eye maple, black horn, and some composite mammoth tusk....but abalone might be a cool direction to head in......

IkaikaDesign In reply to soupcan13 [2011-08-23 00:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, abalone would be an awesome material to carve from. I'm trying to get my hands on some black water buffalo horn to carve with so let me know what you think when you eventually carve your horn.

soupcan13 In reply to IkaikaDesign [2011-08-23 00:47:58 +0000 UTC]

hey hey, right on! Ive tried a little with the horn...it smells like burning plastic and makes a fairly large mess(think of the amount of bone grit you get from cattle bone...now imagine that being all fine powdery black plastic smelling evil....) I didnt really care for it, the finish came out more like wood, very rough but im guessing thats from my inexperience with it....

IkaikaDesign In reply to soupcan13 [2011-08-23 02:02:04 +0000 UTC]

ew...nothing like the smell of burning plastic and fine black powder. Have you tried to buff the horn with oils? There is a man in my favs who primarily carves horn and in some of his listings he talks about the oils and bits he uses to give the horn a mirror finish.
