Well, I guess it's probably really work, but it feels more like playing when I'm doing stuff for myself

Is this only concept? Looks good but if you will add more details this pic will look amazing. The composition is great and I like these flying ships (?)
It have really sci-fi appearance and I like it too!

When I look at this I have some ideas to make similar picture...but I don't want to steal a concept..hah
I invite you to my Gallery.

Yes, this image is just a fast sketch But I might develop it with further detail as you suggest. The real challenge is to find enough time!

I love this so much; it's like taking a flyer ride through the kind of monolithic city that'd be exhilarating to fly through!

I've been "alerted" it resembles something in Halo - but what can you do? There's too much stuff to keep track of - and I just needed to come up with a quick shape for some scale

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-11-28 16:56:02 +0000 UTC]

There are so few REALLY new ideas under the Sun, hm?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2011-11-28 17:02:53 +0000 UTC]

Very few - and I suppose the "shock of the new" (as I remember it being referred to in art school) isn't always the intended target

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-11-28 17:08:18 +0000 UTC]

I miss those days of experiencing real "new". Maybe that's why I wax so nostalgic for the seventies as it was my "age of exploration".

With the internet, it's become extremely uncommon to see something really new - on the level of encountering Giger's work, for instance, or Chris Foss or John Berkey, or Syd Mead, or...
Maybe less really is more - it certainly seems so to me!

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-11-28 17:47:23 +0000 UTC]

Those guys were kinda like the pebbles dropping in the water.
Now all we see are the ripples they left

In all fairness there certainly is some great original talent out there today - and on DA, too. But folks like Frazetta, Mead, Whelan, Berkey, McCall, Nagel, et al were just so ground breaking and really had no or few peers. That and there were fewer avenues for viewing such works. The internet definitely changed the game - I guess for both better and worse. One thing's for sure is that it's easier to get our daily diet of creative visual fuel!

menacing scene, that diving-beetle shape is inherently sinister.

Hello Mr Burg. How did you make those great shapes?
Was it custom brushes, textures or something else?
Really great piece.

steve-burg In reply to qwertyDesign [2011-11-21 03:13:57 +0000 UTC]

The buildings are custom shapes. Just a bunch of lines and rectangles, really. I made a number of layers, then distorted the whole thing into the perspective you see in the painting. It is very fast to work with these shapes, I've discovered.

The little hovercraft (whatever they are) are just silhouettes with some painted detail to give them form.

Its really great. I might have to give that method a workout myself sometime.
Thanks for the tip.
You have developed a great range of methods over the years and worked on so many great projects!

Would be nice to see the background ships travelling in different directions and speeds to give them different shapes - as it is they look copied and pasted (I'm not accusing you of anything!) and don't add any interest

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to ZacharyHogan [2011-11-20 09:42:55 +0000 UTC]

It's good advice. (they are copied and pasted, BTW)
This is really just a sketch, I would definitely want to do what you suggest in a more finished painting
