I'm very intrigued and this information just makes it more interesting.
We know that Ellie can open any locked door she comes across and Mias wants to exploit that ability for some purpose as yet unknown. So he's testing her abilities. If the lock is "free" or unowned, using his logic, it seems Ellie can open it just fine, so he's testing how far her abilities go. If he takes ownership of the lock will it still respond to her, or only to the person it's "bonded" to?
