Description This is something waaaay different from my usual style. The model is Lauren, a film student. She mentioned she liked film noir, so I thought I'd do a little film noir tribute portrait of her. While I was shooting, I kept in mind the noir aesthetic, which is a lot of long shadows and high contrast, and obviously black and white. I also wanted the shot to embody the typical noir themes of despair, alienation, guilt and vulnerability. You know... fun stuff.

Ooooo .. I've no idea how I missed this one in my message center, I only spotted it when I browsed your gallery again! I love the shadows and intregue, the clarity and the obfuscated.
Flim Noir .. definately

the pitch black background and dark large shadows really make it seem like an older style photograph. ala George Hurrell (and i forget if I thanked you for introducing me to his work) so why does she look a little like a clown to me. and please know i'm not insulting her or the image. i think it's the extremely pale face. plus the outfit for some reason seems costumey because of the tattered/flowey sleeve. it's like i expect her to turn around and spin around and dance feverishly. from a moment of calm to frenzy. she really does look pretty.

A fantastic play with the light and shadow!
This is a twist for you.
I love the ambiance of this photo.
I love how you made the focus around her head and face.
Well done.

The mood and lighting in this is amazing! There is hardly anything in the photo visually, yet there is soo much going on. Definatly represents the theme You did a fantastic job. I like shots like this where light is limited, and darkness works as part OF the shape and defining what is happening

Bravo

I'd say you hit the style right on the money! Love the contrast in this photograph! I don't think this style of photography is my favorite though, but I believe you did the style justice.

For me, when it comes to contrasty photo's I love the super high contrast. (which is an alltogether different technique) I like to see the loss of details within the skin and hair. Used to do it via filters and processing, now I think it can be done via photo shop much easier. I do wonder about the quality difference between the two, do you have any feed back on this subject Kev?

quality differences between photoshop and traditional filters? i guess that would depend on a lot of things. you can get cheap filters and you can get expensive ones. same with lenses, film, digital cameras and stuff like that. it's impossible to make a direct comparison unless you are specifying the exact details of the two you're comparing

I know you say that this is way different from your usual style, however I would say that I preffer it because of the character and mood of it. Some of the pics you have done lately are too 'posed' or magazine glamour kind of looking for my liking (personal prefference of course), and I preffered your earlier stuff when I first added you to my watch, but I really like this one because although all of your work that I have seen is very skilled and high quality photography - work like this which really captures mood as well I really like very much.

Great stuff!

is it just one light aimed straight at her face?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

superkev In reply to waldemar-pfordte [2006-05-12 22:24:55 +0000 UTC]

there's a light with a very narrow 10 degree grid pointed at the lower part of her face, and another high and behind her pointed at the wall with a 30 degree grid to create the shadows

Exceptionally moody! The darkness covering her eyes betrays what emotion she is actually conveying at the moment and one can choose as they please. Nice light and shadow play, making one wonder why certain parts are clear while others are hidden. I think you achieved your goals with this one.

Nice shot Kev!
