Description The Mono Lake starscape. Took a fair amount of photoshop, but I think it worked.

Mono Lake is a pretty cool place, it's one of the oldest lakes in the Americas, the last remnant of an inland sea rife with volcanic action. The salinity is about twice that of the ocean, and all the rocks you see in the foreground are salt formations. There are better formations at other places in the lake, but I needed have my camera pointed south to catch the galactic plane.

The lake is home to a lot of birds who kept me company while I waited for it to get dark.

A fair amount of photoshop?  With a winning image like that, who cares?  IT ROCKS!!!  I only wish I were half as accomplished with photoshop as yourself, wow!

so sick, i personally dont care if star shots are photoshopped.
Without it it just doesnt looks contrasty enough.

Fantastic work, Swift, this image is just beautiful. The clarity is perfect from what my untrained eye can see, so I'd say your work with the tracking head and photoshop was worth it. Great picture!

Very nice Image!!!
Are the camera data correct? Is this possible? 1/2 second at F/11 and ISO 200? I cannot believe it?

No, that's probably the foreground image (the rocks) info, but the ISO and aperture are correct. Exposure time for the stars was more like six minutes. I was using a tracking head between my tripod and my camera to counter the earth's rotation. (Polarie Vixen). It allows for exposures I several minutes so you can go low ISO and small aperture for better black sky than high ISO. This made the star trails twice as big on the lake so I used photoshop to mirror the sky. Next time I will switch the tracking head to "Southern Hemisphere" to get an image of the lake and combine to get a more natural image.

Thanks for your detailed answer! The image is great. I have tried some weeks ago, to create an image like yours. Unfortunately without a device to correct the earth´s rotation.  I have tried with high iso, but the image is very bad.

It can be a hard thing to do.  It helps to be some place very very dark, with no moon.  And you have to use lots of photoediting because ISO has to be so high with shorter exposures.
