Description

UPDATE : Won her class!!

Show: EWS Spring Time Fun Mini Show

Stable Name: Lakewood Farm
Horse's Name: Lakewood's Walking with Angels "Aphie"
Handler/Rider Name: Chess Knight
Class Entering: Cross Country

Note: This horse (and the entry) is intentionally in an English left mounting side saddle. It is perfectly safe to ride and jump cross country in.
Other tack includes: a plain snaffle bridle with a cavesson noseband, porterboots with exercise bandages, rubber pull on overreach boots and leather brushing boots. Also a V style breastplate with padding.

Normally, the horse would wear a martingale-breastplate, with the attachments to the reins for cross country competitions. Aphie, being the sensitive nut she is, doesn't respond well to the extra interference on her mouth, so she only has the breastplate.

Chess is carrying a weighted cane which acts as her right leg.

Yes, you can jump in a side saddle. It's perfectly safe (arguably moreso than an astride saddle) but because of the way you're anchored in, you wouldn't be able to rise over the withers the same way.

This has been a WIP for a while now, and I just was inspired to finish it. Heck knows why, what with my huge list of things to do

WIP here: [link]

She looks a tad too rich, to be honest (coat colour) so I may see about editing that...Also Chess' arm is really funky...

This is a few stages after take off and closer to flight when there's more of a bascule, so her forelegs would begin to extend again.

And the background took five seconds, but I really like Lets just say that's forest/shrubbery/vegetation on the course, m'kay?

Around 3 hours total? Nearly 2 to line and flat colour, then barely 1 to shade in. Bit of a rush job...

Any horse can side saddle, silly. :3

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-05-23 19:10:15 +0000 UTC]

Yep, they can. They just may need a couple of sessions to get used to the saddle and weight distribution. Not to mention the long cane where a leg usually is XD. A tutor of mine had her gelding going fine in one after just three sessions, but I guess it depends on the horse, too.

This is so.

Say, I heard that side-saddle was invented so women didn't hurt themselves, is that so or do you know? (honestly, I would think it would be the guy getting hurt...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-05-23 20:00:34 +0000 UTC]

Yup - guys do seem to be the more logical option for being hurt XD (interestingly, every King William in English history has been killed in an accident involving a horse...)

And originally it was considered more decent. Women with a leg either side was unheard of - side saddles kept them presentable and virtuous XD There was also only one horn in the early saddles. The leaping horn was added to the tree later for added security, making it possible for the saddle to be jumped in.

You never know; men could have argued it was about safety, not decency, just to cover their backs XD. It required different weight distribution; women needed help mounting, dismounting and arranging their skirts and the horns (while keeping you secure) could be dangerous if you got caught in them the wrong way, especially with all the skirts, so I'm inclined to say no; it wasn't about safety, as such.

Lawlz. I feel bad for my bro when he goes bareback on Lucky's backbone.

Interesting stuff I say. I just think it's the coolest thing that girls could foxhut in that saddle; yes the saddle was to keep us virtuous (which is totally fine with), but girls surely had the better balance!

You know, I bet pure sidesaddle horses had a weird off balance conformation in their old age.

Hehe - Got prominent withers, does he?

Its definitely some fascinating stuff I linked some amazing pictures of women foxhunting and showjumping side saddle - it really is awesome (and is ample proof for women being more capbable, secure and balanced riders )

And some might well have done - like gotten Arthritis on one side more than another...but most people seem to ride in left mounting or near side saddles. However, women years ago would have owned one of them, and also a right mounting/off side saddle, too. They would have alternated the saddle each time they rode to develop their muscles and balance equally, and also their horse's.

Nowadays, finding an off side saddle is pretty rare; you just don't see too many

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-05-23 20:27:19 +0000 UTC]

You think so? Saddles aren't cheap; I wonder if the lower status riders could only have one saddle (though, if they are that poor they may not have even had a horse).

Fascinating stuff I say. And you need Becca to get Chess an offside SS.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-05-23 21:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Saddles in general are fairly expensive today, and side saddles are a lot more, because many of them are old and the practice is fairly outdated, too. You can get them custom made new, but I'm guessing that has a fair cost too.

But, back when side saddles for women was an every day thing, saddles wouldn't have been so expensive in general, and side saddles would have been made and sold on an equal level. For higher class women, its possible that saddlers (who there would have been more of, too) would sell a near side and an off side together on principle. Just speculation - I don't know a lot about all the semantics XD

Definitely a favourite topic of mine And lol - I should. Strangely, I don't think I can draw someone riding in an offside Aphie is ridden in a GP saddle and bareback on occasion, too, so she gets a relatively even amount of exercise XD

Say, ever heard of Jane Eyre? Pride and Prejudice?

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-05-23 21:50:30 +0000 UTC]

Yup; heard of it. I know its one of 'the classics' but I've never wanted to read it. Saw one of the film adaptations by accident, though...

*lol; still up, actually...*

And btw, are you still okay doing sketchy headshots of winners' horses for the Festival?

Yep, Skye noted me the other day and I have my list. Working on some right now.

WELL, you've got to watch them. Because they are awesome, and just awesome. I don't know, I must be a die-hard romantic.

You're epic; thank you

And lol; classic romance movies like that get on my nerves, make me laugh at inappropriate moments, make me fall asleep or all of the above. Plus I'm not wholy fond of the characters in Jane Eyre, either. Just give me a horror movie

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ratdeity [2012-05-23 00:02:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I actually really like her face in this! Its pretty much the most accurate to my mental image I've managed (If I could only work out how to recreate it...) But her arm is irritating me (too long, too thin, wrist kinda broken and tiny hand...the problems don't end XD)

Other than that, I do really like it - so I actually agree for once Thank you!

ratdeity In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-05-23 00:05:07 +0000 UTC]

oh, i see what you mean there but it's not really noticeable ^.^ as the artist, obviously you see what others don't, haha.

So I just scanned in a sheet of sketches of my nordy colt, and you can barely see them :/ too light. but eh. There's 13 little sketches XD i'm about to upload You should find a way to get a Nordy! then we can be Nordy buddies! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ratdeity [2012-05-23 00:09:51 +0000 UTC]

That's just it; you always find stuff with your own work that people don't see. If I didn't, I wouldn't improve, though, so that's only a good thing

And I'll have to check out your colt when he's uploaded! But I don't think I'll get a Nordy. I love steampunk and pitched in to help *MissDudette work out their genetics, which explains my two Timekins, and Romany is a reincarnation of a story character of mine (the only cold horse I have a real soft spot for). Other than them; I'm sticking with my Arabians . Nordy's have too much substance for me - no dished faces or high tails XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ratdeity In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-05-23 00:20:57 +0000 UTC]

haha XD Arabs are quite nice XD I love the Nordies because I can draw them into the Classic War Cut and not have to deal with long manes or feathering

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ratdeity [2012-05-23 00:28:06 +0000 UTC]

Arabians are a cut above everything else, for me And I love long manes XD Yep, they can be awkward, but I just love them. I'll agree with you on feathers, though - they can be awkward...

This is amazing!!! She has a very good position for a side saddle rider. I have seen side saddle riders jump and they usually look horrible but she looks very good.
The whole picture is very well done

Thank you so much

Yep, I'm a little obsessed with side saddle riding, which I suppose is good incentive to draw it as well as I can XD. And same here - I've seen some very odd positions, so I'm really glad you think this works and isn't one of them

Chess' arm bothers me the more I look at it (being completely spastic proportions) but other than that, I do like it. Thanks again!
