Oh geeze, I don't remember really. I usually 'nurse' my drawings for a couple of weeks, working a little, walkin away, going back, and so forth until I get a satisfactory result.

Well, I've checked out your gallery, and your pencil work looks great to me! The problem you mention about large dark areas insn't apparent in the work you have posted. As far as your question, sure no problem, I don't mind helping out if I can, but I think I should be asking you questions! LOL Anyway, I think it comes down to the paper as well as the pencil. I think the photo looks a little smother than it actually is in real life as far as the black is concerned. I used I think a 6b for those darks, so that comes out really nice and dark on paper. I usually really press hard and leave alot of loose lead on the paper, then I use a...and shhhhhhh, don't tell anyone about this LOL....a makeup sponge to blend it in! LOL This really helps smoothe it all out. Also the paper you use will make a difference in how smooth it looks too, but this becomes tricky, to find a paper that will accept layers of lead, yet still be smooth enough. Anyway, hope this helps, try the makeup sponge, you might be surprised!

Thanks! I gotta stop being lazy and start doing some more pencil work! I enjoy doing portraits, so I don't know why I don't do it more often!

Hell, we're all lazy. I definitely don't draw as much as i should either. I'm the kind though that can't put it down once i start. I'll stay awake for a few days working on it, then if i'm still not done i'll put it away and it'll be weeks till i work on it again because i'm sick of looking at it lol.

absolutly a beautiful portrait... nice penciling, allthough as you say, the pencilfeel kind of got lost in the picture.
did you use different pencils to get your contrasts so good..

Yes, I used all from a regular HB all the way up to a 6B...could have used maybe an 8B for the really darks though...

nice. i like the contrast and the eyes. i hate doin hair too but sometimes it makes the picture. i like the highlights of his beard against the black.

Yes, those little highlights of his beard were tricky...but I kind of winged it and I liked the result. As far as hair goes, I'm just too darned lazy to take my time doing properly! LOL I think on my next portrait, I'll do the hair first, that way I won't get lazy and rush over it...

Thanks...my mother in law said the same thing...she had to look at really closely to see that there was actually pencil marks on the paper! That's what I was going for, so I guess I achieved my goal...still not completely happy with it...but that's just me and my 'never happy with anything I do' attitude! LOL

LOL! If ever I was tired of looking at Wolverine's face, it would be now! LOL But seriously, I could never REALLY be cured of my obsession with Wolvie! LOL Better believe I was almost gonna scrap this one and start over...but I didn't. It turned out nice though, could have spent more time fixing certain things like the leather on his jacket and hair which is where I got pretty lazy and tired and decided to call it quits! Good enough! Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated. Now I just gotta get a frame and a place to hang it...thought right over my bed...wonder if my hubby would mind???? LOL
