Description Zeppelin airship over the Windy City, ca 1952.

Addendum 2013: Coincidentally, there were rigid airships that flew over Chicago in the 1930s. The-Necromancer had not realized this when he'd made this...

Incredible! Reminds me of sky captain and the world of tomorrow. Well done creating this one!

Have you ever played Crimson Skies? you may like it, it's about weird pre-1945 planes, and Zeppelins, an alternate history where they are used a lot.

I've played it a few times, but that was a few years ago already. Cool game.

Er. if she's THAT low around skyscrapers, particularly in Chicago, she MIGHT be in a bit of trouble... Otherwise a lovely image.

On second thought, I think I agree with your assessment of the situation. Too low to look right, methinks...

I feel an edit coming on.

Hey, perfection is esteemed for a reason--it's hard. It's a good image, they just never made the zeppelin port on the Empire State building work because winds hit those skyscrapers and you get updrafts from Hell.

I love your work, thank you for sharing it--thoughtful response is a small payment at best.

Indeed, those updrafts would have been worse than the ones over the desert. I still adore how they used that scheme in the opening of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Never would work, but it certainly is lovely to imagine.

Well--Akron-style rotating propellers? Deflectors down on the structure? You can DREAM. 'Captain Future' lost me when you saw two huge rigids getting cavalierly swatted during the attack on his base, and no one saying a thing. Yeah. Right.

Besides, flying carriers? Speaking of 'Akron...'

I know, I found the HTA flying carrier a far bit too improbable myself. I was a bit disappointed that there were only airships in the first ten-fifteen minutes as well. Saddened that they resorted to blowing two of the up. But it was a rather nice movie, none the less. Not great, but not bad.

It's likely one would have to have rotating props and keep the ship manned while docked, "flying" it as one did with the tall masts. It wouldn't do to have something docked up to the Empire State Building or another skyscraper suddenly do a vertical stand like the Los Angeles did on it's high mast. Made for a really neat, if not totally odd, picture though.

Maybe electric motors powered from the mast turning the props while moored, with gyroscopes to adjust her bearings.

That is a nifty idea, it could be set up so that while in flight the motors are powered by engines or electric generators, and then hooked up to your external power supply at the mast while docked.

Damn how I wish there were people building the big rigids to pitch these ideas to...

We got fairly small semi-rigids... Better than NOTHING, but not by much... Oh, and monster automated non-rigids we never get to see.

You'd think with the cruise-mania going on these days...

The-Necromancer In reply to MensjeDeZeemeermin [2012-04-18 02:25:29 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, one would think that the idea of a rigid airship as a "niche" thing for over-land cruises or something would have sparked someone's attention by now. Well, serious attention, anyways...

Yes, the monster drone ships likely will never be seen by the public, and if they are, not for more than a few minutes at a time. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm glad the NT is around. I just wish Zeppelin would maybe decide to up it's game a little. But considering the market for the NT itself is a little slim these days...

And the looming Helium crisis... But, hey.. GREEN FLIGHT! Yeah, that's the angle! GREEN FLIGHT! TRAINS THAT FLY!

We can hope...

I've heard both sides on the impending Helium shortage. I'm not sure I believe it, but I'm not sure that there is much as what they claim either...

You mean?! THIS: [link]

Tiny picture is tiny, but it's the only one I could find of Zeppelin's "Luftzug" idea...

Well, I was just thinking that LTA rigid is to HTA as Rail Transport is to road. Slower, but 'greener.' And so much more beautiful.

Indeed it is. The nation's railways are a sad shell of what they used to be, at that.

I'm a big fan of increasing the use of railways again, and obviously I think the airship has plenty of potential for applications that currently are being served by semi-truck, airplane, and even a bit of train. And if it's the right type of cargo, perhaps even some things currently handled by ships.

I like to think it's just off to the side of the skyscraper...

Still trying to get down the exact feel for this photomanipulation thing, so your commentary is appreciated.
