Description An oil painting I did from a life model last year (=fall 2003) in a course for portrait painting. The model was a young high school girl, who had put lots of makeup and lipstick on, which shows in the painting.

I'm fairly happy with the outcome. I managed to achieve some likeness, and I still like the colors and lighting. There is someting slightly disproportionate about her neck, which is partly due to having to complete the whole thing in just two sessions. The drawing underneath was done in hurry, which shows too.

Still, all in all, I was happy enough to have her framed, and am now submitting her as my first Deviation.

Great work with oils, I got much more respect for people who mix their own colours, rather than choosing them from a palette of millions.

Thanks, you do an excellent job mixing them yourself

But, traditional artists do get respect here - there's plenty of threads saying "anime is not art" or "photography is not art", but never about oils.

Thank you very much, and thanks especially for the on the Bounty Grunter. Yes traditional artsists do get respect here and its more than well deserved, especially painters. I dont think photography really has a place with art, but then I find it hard to consider my stuff as art, its an art in that it is painted but the subject matter is a little difficult to class as art.

Very nicely done. I really like your paint application and vibrant colors. I wish it weren't so blurry though. Great stuff regardless.

Thanks Maybe I should try to take a new photo. I'm much more experienced now than when I submitted this one.

yeah. I think you should. I'm sure the blur doesn't do much for the details that are actually in the piece.

There's a sharper version now. (I left a slight shadow on the bottom left, but camera ran out of battery, so this is the best I can do now)

yes, I have to agree that is nice work...I like how you highlighed her face with bright pastel colors...

Now for the sessions, did you just quickly sketch and later paint? Or did you start out painting from scratch? I would be curious to learn more of the process since I have never taken a life drawing/portrait class...just interested to see how it all works...I've always sketched from photo reference which allows you to take your time...but I tend to work quickly anyways...

Thank you for comments There was a strong backlight, which shows in the bright area in her face.

I did a simple line drawing, without shadings, directly on the card board canvas (wonder if that's what you call them in English...) just to help with the proportions (and managed to mess the neck up) and painted on top of it. I did the drawing and an underpainting on the first week and finished the work on the next.

The portrait class was a cheap one organized by a local adult education center, with one hired model and a lot of partioners. The teacher did not have time to give that much instruction, and people used different techniques.

The colour around the face is really good. For two sessions this turned out great.
