Velvet--Glove — Winter at Attenborough

Description This is an older photograph, taken about 18 months ago. It was taken very late one afternoon in mid winter at Attenborough Nature Centre, about a mile or two from where I live. The area was flooded to a level higher than I have ever seen it before. Flooding is normal for this nature reserve area - the building that you see is an information/education centre and coffee shop, built on stilts because of the fluctuating water levels. I thought its unusual lines looked rather striking in silhouette like this.

Gorgeous tones - it almost makes me nostalgic for Winter I've a friend who lives a couple of miles from there, in Beeston, but I had no idea such a place was that close!

Your friend would almost certainly know about this site, I'm sure. It's an extensive reserve, mostly old gravel pits that have been flooded and the area managed to create a wildlife haven, for birds in particular. Winter is the best time to visit if you're into birds at all... but it can be bitterly cold and grim at that time of year so I don't venture there very often in winter unless it's a really nice day... I'm such a wuss!

Nice sky and the beautiful reflection is well positioned. I presume the high water level hides the stilts under the building but your hint tells the story. They really should ask visitors to bring buckets in such circumstances - every little helps!

I did give some thought to the effect of cropping away the right side. Such concentrates the composition but possibly by penalising the mood. Maybe a little thrown bread could have induced the two near ducks into a nice placement in the deep? Their feet are already wet (sorry!).

Thanks, Cliff. The stilts are still there, just hidden in the shadows, the water would have to rise a few more feet to reach the building - if that were ever to happen then that would be very serious for the wider (residential/populated) area outside this reserve.
