Description My drawing part of 's December round - portraits. Always going to be my favourite. I also realise this is the second exchange in a row I've chosen to draw a supernatural horse-type beastie. Maybe horses are the way forward.

This is my take on =Domisea 's Serafim, an aristocratic anthro unicorn. He seems to like the military style buttoned jacket so I thought I'd go with that and give him the full epaulettes and everthing. Hope you like it!

Purple textured paper, coloured pencils.

I love drawings on colored paper >w>. You have drawn him well, but I have to say, there is one problem... he doesn't look like him xwx. I know my refs aren't detailed, but you can clearly see that he doesn't have a horse face, but sth more probably like a deer/goat. And no beard xwx. He can be just older there, but it still doesn't solve anatomic aspect ^^' Besides he looks some kind older and rebust, when he is slim young man. I know, maybe I sound rude and should not critique because it's for me, but making character similar to himself it's important thing, as for myself, I always try to make features similar. Sorry If you will feel offended or sth xwx

OK.

Firstly, I am genuinely really sorry and upset that you're disappointed with this picture. A big part of why I participate in group art exchanges like these is that I truly enjoy the challenge of drawing other people's wonderful characters and like you I take pride in being able to get a character "right" for their creator while still drawing them in my own style. And I enjoy people being happy when I've done it well.

However, I've also got to say that yeah, you're right: your refs really aren't detailed, and neither was your entry form description for the exchange.

The only physical description you gave for Serafim besides the refs was "male anthro unicorn" who "looks cute and such, but on the other hand he can look serious". You didn't mention anywhere that I could see in what you submitted for the exchange or in the artist notes for your ref pictures that he is physically more like a deer or goat than a horse, and as your ref drawing style was quite sketchy and chibi/cartoony , there was really no way I could tell that kind of detail from them. A lot of the characters in your big line-up ref had similar shaped faces when shown from the front so I assumed that was a style choice. (I don't have anything at all against sketchy or chibi as a style, incidentally, but because of the flattened detail and the enhancement of proportions like head/eye size, they often don't make the most accurate refs)

To avoid you or your exchange partners being upset or disappointed in future, I think you should add specific details like these to your descriptions or ref sheets.

Now I read my comment again and I see I didn't write about his age... strange x-x.

I'm still of opinion that though the refs are not detailed, you can notice two things - that he has tiny posture, and some, indeed, undefined head shape, but surely not a HORSE. yes, by that small triangle-like nose on the ref, it just disqualifies this option it's no matter of style.  I don't know if you have seen much pictures of unicorns, but it happens they're not depicted with horse head, so unicorn =/= horse. I wouldn't complain even if you gave him a feline face, because it would fit to the ref still more than a horse "D

I don't know how I could write it in description, I probably could do it better, but I thought the thing about serious looking wouldn't be understood as he "suddenly change his appearance from cute unicorn" but it's something that hides in his stare. Yeah... sth that makes you uneasy because it gives conflicting messages - serious or even cold stare, but at the some cute and fragile boy "D. Yes... I should described him like that. Huh, doesn't matter anyway now.

I have to agree with @vladimirsangel on this one. When someone says "unicorn" to me, I imagine a horse with a single horn. I'll only draw a unicorn with a deer-like body if someone specifically says "this character has a deer-like body." Deer-like bodies make me think of kirins more than unicorns.

...why I knew some 3rd person will show their opinion on this

So, it would be better if I didn't write anything about unicorn, meh, great.

He does look aristocratic *nods*
And drawings on dark background always amaze me. It's a little bit like walking on the ceiling.

Thankyou

I love reversing shading for dark papers. It offers so many possibilities.
