It was mid-morning when a figure appeared on the horizon. Lir frowned, recognizing the silhouette of a stallion right away. And he was in the direction that Lir wanted to go. The lone male had no interest in making friends. But the last thing he would do is alter his course to compensate for another, or imply that he was afraid. In fact, he was almost tempted to go right at the male, charge him and send him running, start off his time here right by spreading his reputation as a stallion to be feared. But Lir was not so stupid as he had been in his past. Perhaps he could intimidate the other. But what if it didn’t work, and a fight followed? A fight over what? Nothing. No, he could not go around initiating fights for no reason. He was still tired from his travels, and a broken bone or other injury could mean death, a meaningless death in this case. Instead, he would just approach with calm caution.

Lir felt a twinge of discomfort as he got closer, noticing quite a resemblance between this stallion and Lir’s own father. A flaxen red like himself, but with darker fur. He didn’t let it show as they came into earshot of one another. Lir kept his head high, ears back, and his gaze hard. He would not start a fight, but he would let the other know who was in charge. The darker red seemed more mild-mannered, and accepted the relationship that Lir’s body language requested, turning slightly to the side and licking his lips, flicking his ears. With that established, both of them relaxed.

“Hello,” Lir said. He had spoken first but his voice was not friendly, setting a solemn tone for this meeting. “Lir.”

“Savitr,” the darker red answered with a polite dip of his head.

Savitr. Lir echoed internally, to commit the name to memory. “I am new to these lands. This is Cottonwood Valley?” His ears pressed forward to listen to the answer. He was rather certain that it was, but any information Savitr could give him would be helpful.

“It is.” Savitr said, chancing a bit of a smile.

Though somewhat reluctant, Lir returned the smile, an idea hatching in the young stallion's mind… one that saw befriending this male as a good idea. “Good. I assume you have lived here for a time? How fares the lands?”

“I have. It has been a hot summer. Wildfires in parts, so beware of the winds as you travel. Plenty of mares in the area. But wolves and lions are not uncommon. And humans here and there. Many stallions too...” he trailed off, but Lir knew what he meant. It was a warning. Not all stallions are as easy-going as you.

By the end of the conversation Lir had grown an interest in Savitr. The stallion was older, he knew the land much better, and also a plus was that they looked like brothers. Fooling others into thinking they were a unified team just by sight would intimidate any stallion they passed by. And then once the mares were earned, Lir was confident he could easily outwill, or outfight, this more gentle stallion into leaving him with the prize.

“The lands are dangerous this time of year, perhaps we would benefit from an alliance,” Lir suggested. Something passed across the other stallion’s eyes at the idea. Was it longing? Lir couldn’t say for sure, he wasn’t particularly good at reading others.

The red stallion got more insight from the way the other nodded and answered, “Sure, that sounds like a good idea.” From the tone of his voice, Lir sensed that this potential relationship was more to the fellow flaxen than just a convenient partnership for survival. He doesn’t want to be alone anymore. Lir wasn’t one for such sentiment, even if the realization caused a tiny tinge in his own mind. A stallion was always alone, and if he wasn’t alone then soon he would be. But either way… whatever compelled Savitr to act in a way that benefited Lir, the rosy red was alright with.

Lir nodded in approval and began to take the lead. Savitr trotted after, coming up alongside. Lir glanced sideways, just catching Savitr look away. Wariness? Suspicion? It was not surprising that Savitr questioned how altruistic Lir’s intentions were, after all Lir hadn’t come off as friendly at first. And to his credit Savitr was right to be apprehensive since Lir’s intentions truly were anything but altruistic.

Still, even if he already suspected Lir could be using him, and while Lir didn’t plan on outright lying if confronted (after all, he was just trying to survive and be successful like everyone else), it would do no good for Savitr to know his plan for certain.

To try and seem kinder, Lir slowed his trot somewhat, looking at Savitr. “You have been in the area longer, and know the land. Why don’t you lead on?” Lir had learned to be dominant whenever he could. And of the two he was certainly the more aggressive. So it was hard for him to give up the leading position even if temporarily. But it was for the long-term strategy of implying friendship and equality.

Savitr gave Lir a smile, happy to take the reigns. “I know where there is a river nearby with some trees for shelter. It will be a good place to rest.” Lir nodded, glad that Savitr already seemed more comfortable with him, and glad at the aspect of a river and rest. Though he could be leading me anywhere. Lir was always looking out for deceit, such paranoia came with being deceitful himself. Savitr seemed an honest stallion but Lir wasn’t ready to trust him fully just yet…

Summary: Lir meets another similarly colored stallion, Savitr! Lir learns that Savitr knows the lands of Cottonwood Valley well and so, seeing a benefit from a partnership, he suggests they travel together. Savitr accepts but both seem a bit uncertain about the arrangement.
