Just curious, what did you use to carve the design in the antler and to hollow it out completely. This is awesome ^^

I use a specialty highspeed rotary flexshaft with a variety of steel cutting and carving burrs, plus a lot of patience & sandpaper. Glad ya like it!

I'm not sure if you're the first one to do this or not, so I figured I should ask if you minded me trying this.

Fine by me. If I directly inspired you, can you throw a link to mine in your deviations artist comments?

How in the world did you carve it without it cracking? Can you tell me the tools you use on bone to dye it? What about a drimmel to carve it?

Wyrdhaven In reply to electric-ace [2010-01-27 02:00:26 +0000 UTC]
I actually use a Foredom flexshaft, which is the nicer version of a Dremmel.
(Think metal parts, not plastic, a better motor, etc...)
To do the carving, I use very small dental burrs with the Foredom, and I watch that I don't overheat the material, backing off if it starts getting even slightly warm.
Deer antler is really very easy to carve like this, and not prone to cracking at all unless you are using antler that has weathered in the woods or something.
Dyeing bone and antler isn't something I know much about, honestly. None of the color you see on this piece is dyed, that's just the natural outside of the antler.

Thank you so much for your help and pointers! I have been using the deer horns that I have found in the woods, so I suppose that will be the first thing I remedy! Thank you again!!

Yeah, really weathered antler has had the minerals start leaching out thru the actions of sun, rain and such, and is brittle. If you find it the year it's shed, it's fine, but if it sits for a season, it's great for looking at but not so good for carving.
(FYI: Horns are on cows, oxen, wildebeast and antelope, and are made of what is essentially compressed hair. Antlers are on deer, caribou and elk & reindeer, and are bone.)

This one is currently available for $50, and that's about what I would charge to make something similar.

Wow. That's a good price for something so good. My great grandfathers work is sold for 4,000$ just about. Look up Stanley Hill you might find someof his work ^^

There is typically a price gap between "traditional" carvers and those using nontraditional methods like myself. Essentially, when you innovate, you don't get paid as much, regardless of the quality of the results.

Yeah I know. The reason it is so much is because he passed away. He used to do it based on myths and legends.

Hoe wide is the bore on it, and, how did to bore out the curve in it if you did?
Puh-lease.

The hollow is only about an inch deep, and 1/2 inch wide at the widest.
It's not hollowed past the curve. It's just meant to hold something like a piece of cotton and scented oil.
