Description There is a tale about a lovely seal that shed her skin as she came upon the shore. She transformed into a beautiful woman and became a delight to the eyes of fishermen in those parts. One day a man took her seal skin as she was bathing in the shallow waters and she soon became the wife of the lonely fisherman. She spent her days as a good and loyal companion to the man until one day she found her skin and she returned to the sea as seal once again.

For this was her destiny, to fill the heart of a lonely man with love and service until she was called back to the sea.

This original was created using watercolors on Arches 140lb cold press paper. It measures 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.

Hey there, love your artwork! I printed this particular piece for myself to copy and thought the result came out alright. I was meaning to ask if I may use the interpreted picture I drew for my thesis about creatures of Celtic mythology. I would of course add your DA to my list of sources. What do you think? I can send you the pic if you want!

Absolutely stunning image, I absolutely love it. I was wondering if I could have permission to use this image. I'm making a series of cards with mythological images and descriptions to go along with my nail polish line which is named after mythological creatures. I'd really truly love to use this Selkie picture for the card, I think your piece exemplifies the Selkie myth perfectly. If you could get back to me either way I'd really appreciate it. Well done.

This is such an amazing piece I cannot stop looking at it! The texture, colour, softness reminds me of the illustartions in the Cornish folk tale books I read as a child : ) It also reflects the nature of the selkie herself so well along with her sense of innocence yet strength and endurance at the same time.Beautiful : )

I'm sorry, but as beautiful as this picture is, I can't consider any tale where a woman is forced to stay with a man because he stole her most precious possession to be a good one.

James,
your use of color in this piece is dead-on! The delicate sky, a bit gloomy, but a few rays of brightness peek out from the curtain! I also can really appreciate the texture of the skin, and her pose. I also dig that you allowed her the dignity of being covered. The beauty is all about the story you see- and not her cup size. Another magnificent piece!
