This pulled me right in, her eyes are magnificent and full of life and emotion and the textures on the skin and the fabric are unbelievable - that little bee is such an intriguing touch, really makes it into a story - beautiful!

how do you make the colours look so realistic? do you start in black and white or with colours right away?

YannickBouchard In reply to Hyoko-x3 [2011-07-24 00:18:47 +0000 UTC]

I use colors right away. I pretty much work my digital paintings the way I'd do with oils. I block the background with a median colors, then I do the dark areas, higlights, then more details and middle tones to blend the zones, and details and texture at last. With digital it's easier cause I always work with reference pictures, so I can use the colors directly from the reference image.

Alright cool I have a little bit of a problem chosing colours directly, this is why I start out in b/w. But later I add colours with a tool (I don't know its english name) it's called something with gradient I think. But the colours don't look very real afterwards =/ painting with pil colours seems to be much more difficult to me though

Well I think it really is a matter of personal preference. I've seen artists achieve really incredible pieces by starting in black and white and adding colors afterwards! Just do it the way you feel it works better for you!

Wow, just amazing! Did you use special brushes for her skin texture, or did you just meticulously do it by hand?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YannickBouchard In reply to Omnicogito [2010-03-23 00:12:29 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn't use any special brush, it was a simple round brush that I used for the whole thing. So yeah, basically it's a meticulous work of patience
