PoD: 1930s (Set in the same timeline as my West Germany map)
Instead of Hitler, a strong democrat (Basically an character comparable to Atatürk in Turkey) takes power in the Weimar Republic and pursues massive reforms to stabilize the country and to make Germany great again, leading to the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1936. The Rhineland is still remilitarized by the Bundeswehr, which also has been expanded to improve German might, and the Anschluss also occurs in 1938. However, in 1944, World War II breaks out when the Soviet Union, led by a more rational and expansionist Joseph Stalin, launches a massive invasion of Eastern Europe under the guise of "creating a buffer zone against the West".
WWII lasts for three brutal years until 1947 (OTL WW2 innovations still occur as both sides try to win the war with any means), resulting in a stalemate favoring the USSR, with much of Eastern Europe, except for Yugoslavia (Which waged a guerilla war, led by Marshal Tito, against the Soviet invaders), under it's boots. But the most dramatic effect is the resulting split of Germany into two rivalling states. In West Germany, the democratic government remained in power and was quick to stabilize the situation while in East Germany, the Soviets established a communist puppet government led by the Socialist Unity Party (Which itself was created by a forced merger of SPD and KPD). Also, East Germany had East Prussia annexed to Poland in a bid by Stalin to "compensate" Poland for it's loss of it's own eastern lands to the USSR, creating even more bitterness. West-East tensions and the nuclear proliferation of both the US and the USSR soon led to the rise of the Cold War.
East Germany still became a unitary state, albeit keeping the states in place and even creating several new ones out of larger ones.
42 years after the end of WW2, East Germany, just like the other Warsaw Pact states, is suffering from economic stagnation during the 1970's and 80's and is being generally viewed as the less powerful of the two Germanies, as unlike the West, the GDR lacks it's own nuclear arsenal, with the only nukes on East German soil being Soviet warheads. East Germany, even before the stagnation period, has remained much poorer than the West, but still amongst the wealthier Warsaw Pact countries. But even with the economic stagnation, East Germany remains the second-most powerful Communist nation in Europe, just behind the Soviet Union itself. There has been a calming of tensions of sorts with it's western neighbor but even with the current calming of tensions, many view a potential reunification of Germany as being far away, as even with the economic decline of the Soviet bloc, it still stands strong militarily...
This map features the states and districts (This timeline's GDR only renamed some of the districts, but did not reorganize them as much as OTL. The states also survive, but essentially have no power under the unitary state.) of the German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany.
