Description This is my newest fine art piece that I've done at the Gemini School. It is my second figure painting and my 6th painting over all in my school. This is acrylic on Illustration Board and it took me about 2 1/2 weeks to complete. I really enjoyed doing this one, it presented a lot of new challenges (especially in the hair and beard) and really helped me further perfect my traditional techniques. I learned a lot about blending through finishing this one. He is actually the old neighbor of my instructor, and I think he definately has that good ol' neighbor Chuck feel to him. I hope you all enjoy.

I cameback to your work cause i needed some inspiration and maybe visual guidance on portraits. I've just started on one and have another one i want to do too and feel like i am going nowhere in terms of what i should do, for lack of guidance and experience... i'm using acrylics too. i think the hardest is to capture the essense / personality of the subject as well as shading and getting a 'full' look, mine tends to be flat and 2d-ish. Anyway, just wanted to say , 'hey...!" and still in awe of your skillz.

Well thank you! All I can say is, using a photo will help you get the essence of a portrait. Really grid it out and don't leave out any details. The things that distinguish our faces and hold our personalities are so small and slight, so minor changes alter everything. Take your time. Also, since you are using acrylics, are you using a Wet Palette? If not, see my deviation on a wet palette for instruction... it makes a world of a difference.

Wow... you know, I faved a painting of yours a while back and decided to re-visit your gallery to see what else you had to offer - I'm only sorry I didn't do so sooner! All of your work is very professional and the realism is just amazing. I'd say you have a realistic quality that was lost in a bygone era, and I am just floored by the detail, the attention and the focus that you pay to everything in all of your work. This particular piece is flawlessly rendered and you show his expressiveness and all the details of his face to perfection. My hat is off, sir, and I'll watch you in order to keep up with your fabulous new work as well.

cool. you did another portrait. love it. though i still like "Bob: Plant Detective" this would rank right up there with it. he certainly looks like someone’s' neighbor. the type that look over your fence just to see what you're having for dinner or something. lol.
anyways. so you had him pose for you, or was it photo based?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bobtheraccoon In reply to NaomiVanDoren [2006-02-24 21:34:52 +0000 UTC]

I agree, I would visualize him trimming the hedges and trying to start a conversation with you as you walk to your car. LOL. It was photo based. For general purposes that works much better than posing, because you don't have to wory about anything moving (or paying a model).
