This is the evil twin to Enliven (or visa versa, I don't know). I did this from a color photograph and had to paint it black and white. This was even harder than the last because it really stretched me to discover the exact tones of many colors instead of just imagining the colors I want to use and then matching the tone. Also, I do not paint with black, so that made this perticular project more interesting. While I am used to painting color grays and color blacks in my normal paintings, in this one, I had to make sure that my grays were really gray, and also very consistant throughout. It is done in acrylic on illustration board and is about 12" by 9" and I finished it in about 1 & 1/2 weeks to 2 weeks. I hope you all enjoy him. I know I do. just a question, when you say you didn't use black, did you mean that you just didn't use straight black, or didn't even mix with black?

Don't wory, I didn't know about this 5 years ago. I don't buy black paint at all. I use other colors, dark browns, dark magentas, dark blues, and dark greens to mix my own "blacks" by mixing complimentary colors together to "grey it down" and darken it. This provides a wide mixture of shades in your blacks and greys to make your painting have more depth.

What intriquate detail! A lot of time, when you someone paint an older face, it looks so unnatural... but there's a real care put into your technique. It looks textured and weather and real, not plasticy
