What a great picture! Whilst picking out a work for each Doctor for the Featured folder of Doctor-Whovians this week, I pick this one because when my eye glanced over it I gasped. It's so awesome.

I was thrilled when this turned up in DWM. Your "real" version of Max is right on the money. Love the slightly befuddled look ya gave him.

Hi Brian,

Love this one great colours. The woman doesnt look a bit bothered as if she sees it all the time. The guy in the hat looks like the actor Mark Williams. Are all of these pictures for Dr Who are they all published?

Thanks!
Funny you should notice Nyssa's (lack of) surprise - I've painted her several times and I've looked at lots of reference pics, and in none of them does she vary her expression a jot. I've seen photos of her as herself, out of character, and her facial muscles appear to work just fine. But a possible explanation: her character comes from a planet of scientists and maths whizzes and she sees herself as being pretty unflappable - so perhaps she was just staying in character?

Kudos for recognising Mark Williams - he was guesting in that episode. The illustration was done for Doctor Who Magazine, one of a semi-regular series to go with articles on the company "Big Finish", who produce new original dramas featuring the original actors (inc Doctors, various Companions and guest stars.) They're available on CD or to download and before the revival of the TV show kept the Doctor alive through the long, dark 90's.

And yes, all the Dr Who stuff has been published, either in the magazine, the Yearbook, or the BBC official website

Yeah, Nyssa was mostly 'unflappable' and the few times she screamed seemed a bit forced like she got told 'ok you're the only woman in this scene so you'll have to do the scream'. She did get quite upset and scared during Terminus though.

Well i love them keep up the good work, I have only just taken back up the pencils and paint and i am trying to pratice like mad, when i have the time. How long did it take you to be come accomplished if you dont mind me asking?

Ha!-I'll let you know when I feel accomplished Seriously, all I ever see is what was in my head and how far short the finished result usually falls. Thank god for deadlines or I'd never stop fiddling with the work. There comes a time when you just have to say "It's done!" - though that can be hard to see.

In answer to your question, I don't think it really helps to measure yourself against others, all that matters is the effort you're prepared to put in yourself - it's an ongoing process for everyone. You can always spot the artists who've plateaued, they're the ones who're happy with what they do

Hi Brian
Thanks for the reply, I know what you mean by it never being finished as thats something I always do.....maybe I should give myself a dead line instead, lol. I find I am good at copying something but not putting ideas from my head to the paper,I have tons of ideas but getting there is another thing, but that is something I am also working on. Thanks for taking the time to answer me back, If you get a bit of time one day, if you can look at my work and give us your honest thoughts I would be greatful, many thanks Shal
