Think i've worked off that 608! Is that the interchange yard between the belvidere sub and the J? used to keep the old hoppers with the plastic covers there for the dirty dirt they were hauling out of an idustrial site just south of Ann St. First time i ever worked with a freight car or rode in a locomotive was right there by the bike path bridge.

Union Pacific "Yard" - UP ran out of 4-digit locomotive numbers under their old AAR reporting marks (UP) so they did this. Course I woulda' told them to forget about merging with the C&NW and they wouldn't have been a problem. LOL

UPY units are always the most beat up of anything on UP rails. But surprisingly, they seem to be around the longest.

About 10 seconds after I took this picture the switchman came out of the cab and yelled to tell me to keep my eyes open because there was a second unit coming down the J behind him.

Union Pacific is a great railroad. The other Class I roads are too, but UP is my favorite.
A tough, old engine is neat to see...a brute workhorse.

Personally, I like the look of an old, worn engine with rough paint better than all the shiny new ones. Shows it's been through hell and keeps on going.
