Description A critter from Lovecraft's Dreamlands.

I imagine them to be a race of savage rat/fae creatures with the potential to become familiars to wizards and witches.

EDIT: Yes, it looks at lot like Brown Jenkins.

In fact, the most curious little headcanon appeared in the process of drawing this - I realized that Brown Jenkins seems to be very fond of the Dark Man, Nyarlathotep's avatar, in 'Dreams in the Witch-House', what with all the nuzzling, and then I remembered that Nyarly is a regular in the Dreamlands; long story short, my idea is that Nyarly captured some unfortunate Zoog and mutated it into the creature known as Brown Jenkins.

Also, the Zoogs try to eat a kitten at one point, which according to Lovecraft is about as bad as eating a human baby, if not even worse. Also, they're mentioned to be very hostile to trespassers who get lost in their woods, but that's more of a quirky characteristic.

While this fella is a far cry from my headcanon, I still like him!

(And that Brown Jenkins backstory is certainly interesting and is being filed away for further exploration.)

For me, it'd have to be the second one. I'm not really a pink person, and I love the golden egg with the carriage! I have a carriage that's quite like it that my grandma gave me. Grandad used to be really fond of it and push it up and down the mantelpiece while it played music, but he died a long time before I was born. But yeah, the second one for me.

Yes! So sorry i spelled his name wrong. I have loads of his books, how could i get that wrong.

The Zoog reminds me of a creature in the Utter Zoo Alphabet, maybe it's the name that reminds me of the Zoat..."As to the Zoat, what can be said, there was but one and now it's dead".

dark-precipice In reply to gorgonbreath [2013-07-15 18:43:15 +0000 UTC]

The Zoat/Zote there looks like a dead bird, so it's probably the name.

The Zoogs appear in Lovecraft's 'Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath'. Have you read that particular work of his?

I've read that one,but i'm not so keen on the dreamy stories.

My favourites are the Nameless City,The Rats in The Walls and the Music of Erich Zann. I have no idea why i like those best.

dark-precipice In reply to gorgonbreath [2013-07-15 20:21:19 +0000 UTC]

I really like 'Rats in the Walls' - it's a chilling tale, with so many layers, and to me it's one of Lovecraft's finest (partly because, sadly, even today we hear horrifying stories of people being locked up and treated like animals).

The others I can take them of leave them.

The Rats in the Walls is one of those stories that you think "well it can't get any worse..", but it just piles on the horror.

Soon i will be going to see a stage play of The Statement of Randolph Carter, and i'm so excited!
