Description Beads Beads and more Beads

Progress on Amidala's headdress - nearly there!
Its made in 2 pieces - I can't drive the car cos it's too high, so I will get the wig and costume on, then drive round to Expo and then put on headdress - simples!

1 This is two frames made of cardboard, shaped to fit over my head.
2 Cover them with kitchen roll using PVA glue. Thread ribbon/tape through the bottom frame - this secures it onto the cotton doily.

3 The hair is from a cheap long black witch wig from eBay. This was cut into lengths about 10" long and sewn down the middle on a strip of thin card. I made 2 of these (they resemble giant hairy caterpillars). One of the caterpillars is lightly varnished on one side (to stick the hair together and help it to stand up).

4 Then glue the two pieces of hair (caterpillars) together, fold in half with the varnished side outwards and glue into the arched frame that sits on your head.

5 Paint and decorate the frames. Add the other curved frame over the hair and stick into place.

6 I added another light coat of varnish to help keep the fan shape together.

7 The lace cap is a cotton doiley which is covered in wood glue (PVA) - I put a plastic bag on my head and then the gooey doily to mold it into shape and wait for it to set. (Make sure no one sees you like this!!) Once it is fully dry it goes quite hard - you don't need to wait that long with it on your head, just long enough for it to stay in shape when you take it off.

8 Add a fringe of beads and two plastic egg shapes (again from eBay), trim the top of the hair into a neat blunt cut and there you have it.

That is super impressive. You make it look so easy! I don't think I could have figured that out on my own. Thanks for sharing, and fabulous work!

This is my favourite crown in the movie, it's great how you recreated it, every detail is perfect

how did you attach the plastic egg shapes to the frame? Why the need for the kitchen roll on the frames? Β Does this help to keep them together? Β What an amazing job. Β

I see the ribbons, but how do you get it to hold on to your head?

The ribbons hold the frame to the doily, the doily is made stiff with PVA glue (you mould it to your head shape while wet - use a plastic bag/cling film over your hair to protect it from the glue, then allow to set and dry). Tie the frame to the stiff doily and attach the ear pieces to the frame. The ear pieces angle inwards and make a good tight anchor to your head. This was all I used to fix it to my head - no clips, ties or anything. I was able to walk about outside quite safely - even with a stiff breeze blowing!!

Hi, Thank you very much, it wasn't too difficult. Once I had it planned in my head it went ok, you just have to break it down into steps!!
