Description (2008) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

Fortune was a bit of a conundrum - traditionally it shows a wheel with figures perched on it, some rise into fame and fortune, others fall into poverty and misery. While there are a lot of ups and downs for some of the characters in the HP books I didn't really have anything as iconic as the "Wheel of Fortune" spring to mind.

Finally I settled on the whole "destiny" discourse in the books. Upon coming to Hogwarts the sorting hat allocates everyone to their house, and thereby makes implicitly a statement about the person's character and future: Hufflepuff - nice folks but not too bright, Ravenclaw - unconvential brainiacs, Gryffindor - noble and reliable friends, Slytherin - ambitious and somewhat warped and predestined to go off to the dark side in later life.

So is fate fixed? At one point Dumbledore suggests that the school is sorting people too soon - and some folks manage to spectacularly break through their "house conditioning" like the traitorous Wormtail and the ultimately heroic Snape who each don't quite fit the bill.

To me fortune is a bit of both - there always is some sorting happening in life - which part of town are you born in, how much education could your parents afford, what self-image did others give you (fat, smart, popular, a geek, a jock, a reliable friend)? But you also have to work with what you're given, and there your fate isn't fixed.

So all in all I felt that putting the hat and the houses up in the card alludes to the "fixed" stuff, but having everyone compete and add or lose "marbles" for their house showed that there also is room for personal effort and reward. That's pretty much summing up fortune for me. Some cards life deals you - and some you get to pick yourself, and it's always up to you how you play your hand.

If you pull "Fortune" in a spread, you can be sure that the wind will change direction. If you're at the bottom of the pile, you'll get your chance, if you're on top of the world, better watch out...

You're welcome. In my opinion, in terms of benevolent DE, Peter ranks #2 because he mostly acts out of fear, and regrets his actions.

Wow! You even included the face on the hat! I love that!

XD And Hufflepuff also finally got a description! They always seem to be called the Other students, or particularly good finders.

I definitely wanted to give each house (and each element) equal weight and exposure. Neglecting water over fire or air over earth usually means you unbalance yourself.

I think this is my favorite of your cards. I'm not if it's for the beauty of your drawing or of your writing. They're both intoxicating.

Thank you, it was one of those where no immediate solution was apparent, so I really had to delve deeply into my personal view of the card to find a meaningful image.

Ohh, thanks! You really looked at the details!

IllusionalLove In reply to Ellygator [2008-06-12 18:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, with these kind of drawings you I just MUST look at the detail. I'm afraid that I'll miss something important and beautiful like that.
But I must say, when I heard about the House Points being described, I happened to think of them as HUGE, larger than life gleaming hour glasses, which would be slightly frightening to see in real life. I do hope that they depict them in the movies to come.

Yeah, be interesting to see how they turn out!

IllusionalLove In reply to Ellygator [2008-06-14 04:44:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it would, but they seem to be leaving out more and more important points in each of the more recent movies.
Did you know that the 6th installment will be split into two parts?

Ellygator In reply to IllusionalLove [2008-06-14 12:04:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I heard that, hopefully they won't waste it all on the trio traipsing through the forest(s) squabbling, but instead show us chapter 33 in detail, and lots of things about Malfoy Manor!

I'd love to see how they portray Malfoy Manor. It's supposed to be a beautiful, snobbish home.

So, question. Are you pro-Lucius or not?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to IllusionalLove [2008-06-20 13:51:32 +0000 UTC]

Definitely pro-Lucius. When I just had the books to go on, I was okay with the character, but since the movies, I'm afraid Jason Isaacs has totally spoiled my sympathies for the good guys (well with the exception of Snape of course!)

Sorting Hat is an AWESOME character. He deserves more credit for cool, if you ask me.
Genius idea, by the way. Tarot cards have always been very interesting to me. I'm a Hermit, I looked it up a few years ago.

Thank you and cool - I love that card. It's been a trusted advisor to me in many situations. My "personality" card is Strength from the Majors and the Queen or Princess of Wands (depending on how silly I feel) from the Minors...

I really must refresh myself on the subject of Tarots. I don't, like, use them to interpret what's going to happen to me in life, I just find them fascinating with the accuracy they can have.
I think they work a tad better than the Zodiac.

Ellygator In reply to IllusionalLove [2008-06-13 17:35:30 +0000 UTC]

Definitely a fascinating topic. And yeah, I don't really think of them as a divination tool, more like a way to surface solutions that my subconscious already has, but that my consious mind still is in doubt about. To me its more comparable to keeping a dream diary or using a pendulum rather than employing some form of outside oracle that "tells" you how the future is going to shape up.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllusionalLove In reply to Ellygator [2008-06-14 04:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Dream diaries are also interesting, but again, whether they're anything but fun, I really don't know, and I don't care to delve that deep. That's like trusting a fortune cookie.
Numerology is also cool, but time consuming.

This might be my favorite interpretation, because it's exactly how I see life. Being born in the ghetto doesn't mean you have to be a gang-banger, being Rodeo Drive doesn't mean you have to step on people to get what you want. We are dealt our hand but we put our cards in order and add to our decks.
