Cool I'll be on the look out for that. I wanted to get the Fire Hawk up today but the winows are taking for ever to make even with copy and pasting them in large sums.

No its 3D but the program I use doesn't have a mirror option so I'm stuck drawing the windows for one side and then having to do the same thing on the other. I'm trying to see if it has any updates that add the mirror option.

Sketch Up, it's supposed to be an architectual design program but I have found other uses for it. Plus it costs less than AutoCAD.

never heard of it...why not find a pirate and move a step up to something like max or maya?

Actually its the cartoon like effect that drew me to it. Reminds me of Futurama if I do say so myself. But I could get a pirate if I wanted to. But to me a 3d program is a 3d program.

nah 3d programs are anything but created equal. for example do yu have tools like camfer, bevel, and extrude? subdivision surfaces? nurbs? free deformation latices? those are just a few of what i would die without. now granted with whatever you could get the interfaces would be set up differently. but you modeling would love you for it. ive used quite a few different programs, each one takes a deal of itime to learn but each also has very different strengths and weaknesses.
and for that cartoon effect there is a shader built into 3ds max that will give you a very nice cartoon effect, much the same there is one in lightwave as well.
but id say pick one up, its not like your useing it commercial so no one will really care, equally you can get Gmax (game model variant of 3dsmax) for free at turbosquid.com along with a shiton of free models for a whole slue of programs

excellent!!! my understanding is that there is no built in render engine that it is strictly a modeler. but it should do nicely for popping out some pretty ships.

I got it working now and it's a whole different experience. But I can't tell the program to draw a line 100 feet I have to estimate basically. I haven't totaly figured it out yet but I'll try.

failurecrusade In reply to K1092000 [2005-11-22 06:59:26 +0000 UTC]
what i do in most programs to guess scale is i simply enter the number for the dimension as whatever unit is default. ie for a 100ft line i would simply draw two points and then enter the corridnates for the first point to be x-0, y-0, x-0 and the second x-0, y-100, z-0 and then just call the units feet when it came down to imagineing size. when im building something i just build to the proportions i had visualized, then make a box at the length and scale the rest uniform till it matches the box.

That sounds like a good plan. I'll try something like that. Now I just have to get used to drawing with the three screens and looking at the perspective view to make sure I'm doing it right.

failurecrusade In reply to K1092000 [2005-11-22 20:15:51 +0000 UTC]
the three screens will come in handy, youll findyourself working off of those more than any other veiw. there also should be veiw rotate tools for each screen, if it is as much like 3dsmax as i have been told then youll find all the veiwport tools in the bottom right corner

Ok well I'll keep messing with it until I get the hang of it. I'm just used to working on one screen where you can change your views. Like going from top view and then switchin to Iso so I can extrude it.

also you hsould be able to set it up to work with just one screen at a time. and switch between them like your used to

im fired i still havent started up gmax yet. extrude is a handy tool, one that i use almost all the time. if it has an editable poly option another tool you may find yourself useing is inset, when coupled with extrude its a very very quick way to do armour plates. have you found a way to translate the models into your rendering engine? otherwise how ya liken the program so far?

gmax doesn't export any of the files that can be imported into sketch up. It exports them as plasma files or .p3d. Gmax is basically like sketch up just without the rendering option.
