Description For the first time in a long time I have given some love to my own universe.

The goal for this model was to push my abilities in design, skill, and patience. The mentality was to use the techniques I have learned building low poly ships as highly efficient game models in a high poly model. The result: little to no geometry clipping, and severe polygon economy (all things considered) in the highest detail model I have built to date.

Aside from a test of skill, this model also marks the first of a new genoration in the Bloodstained Star's concept development. I had come to the conclusion that several design elements on the older concepts simply did not fit the feel and role I wanted the ships to have. This iteration however matches rather closely to what my minds eye had come up with years ago and been unable to produce untill now.

This is for all intensive purposes the final geometry. minute changes may be made, along with LOD's for the turrets and eventually texture mapping!

Lastly I seem to have developed an affinity for posting images with alpha channels, so if it looks a bit wonk zoomed out, then be sure to fullview

no meshsmooth. tri are in the millions, but most of its in the turrets

Well, I confuse. The edge of the ship seem look perfectly curved. Usually it's done by Meshsmooth.

Oh well, Still love the ship.

nah, i enjoy getting those really clean curves by hand. all the extra useless poly you get out of meshsmooth just bother me.

glad you like her!

Well, good job then. It's impossible for me to do that, unless there's unused super computer

its not impossible, just very time consuming. heavy use of the camfer, target weld and edge/vert connect tools. its a very efficient way to model so its easier on your system than alot of other methods.

El-Bronco In reply to failurecrusade [2010-01-26 10:57:48 +0000 UTC]

The methode you use similar with mine, except by adding meshsmooth and symmetry. Since I use Meshsmooth, using chamfer is nightmare .

Great job on this ship, I like the placement of the guns (are there any missiles, or are they concealed in the design?). What is Bloodstained Stars?

Okay, I gaved up: too much comments to read on this one ) Jejeje, having so much comments sure tells a lot about one's work, doesn't it? Anyway, congrats for this outstanding piece; I have watched your progress closely and I can say that with this model you overcome yourself. Well done, mate!

Thought I am not a fan of high poly models (can't find utility for them in RTS games I design )) I agree that the model will look great on the big screen So, about the texture work: it should take you an awfull amount of time to do it. I will asume this is a personal work which you did to test your limits, and that you don't need to bother about texturing Am I right? Maybe not... Anyway, great piece and I will be lookin' forward to new models 'signed' by you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

failurecrusade In reply to synthoverseer [2007-02-18 04:09:00 +0000 UTC]

actually before long we will be seeing models with this kind of geom detail in games, with some of the stats the next gen graphic's engines are boasting we are on the brink of haveing real time photoreal geom on screen ingame.

as for tex, i had planned on doing a texture, but no longer have a useable copy of the model (hard disk failure)

This is really the most gorgeous, sound, and practical (at least in terms of futuristic ships) design I have ever seen. I'm not just talking about the model itself, but rather the entire concept. She somehow manages to keep a sleek body while having a powerful, blunt forward. Turret placement is very workable. My only slight complaint would be that she looks more vulnerable at her midsection, where it seems to be a fragile-looking "neck" of sorts. Aside from that though, VERY awe-inspiring.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

failurecrusade In reply to eeriebus [2007-02-14 05:44:49 +0000 UTC]

there is one turret emplacement on the ship that needs a fix, can you spot it?

the thin 'neck' is something that was adressed. the visual mass of the majority of the hull is deceptive in one way or another. in all reality the neck is no more thin than the rest of the hull. from neck aft (the spine) is all roughly the same thickness and internal density. the foreward section is, in terms of dimension, thicker. however the foreward section consist's mostly of docking bay's and is consequently at nowhere near the mass of any other component of the ship.

A rule often forgotten in Sci-fi is that ships have internal's and that those internals affect both the integrity adn physichal properties of the ship.

Anyway, glad you like her so much, she is to this day still my favorite and i look foreward to when i can do more in the same flavor.

eeriebus In reply to failurecrusade [2007-02-14 12:41:00 +0000 UTC]

Something on the bottom of the ship looks like it'd accidentally hit the ship's forward if it fired... though it may be a perspective thing that's screwing with my eyes.

What did you major in to start designing and modeling things like this? I'm going to be entering college this fall as an intended industrial design major, but I don't know if a major like that is going to allow me to work with sci-fi so much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

failurecrusade In reply to eeriebus [2007-02-18 03:57:13 +0000 UTC]

as far as the foreward arc is concerned all the guns are clear, its one of the turrets on the underside that would have a severely limited traverse as it is too far recessed into the underside, all i would need to do is raise the mount, but no can do as i no longer have the model.

Funny story im a college drop out. too expensive for what it is really worth. Figured out that i was better off on my own.

Just a thought though. It's always nice to see the whole package to a nice model, but heh sometimes it would only be possible if you had that clock that can stop time around you. P
