Description Another splash page from my unpublished comic Shrike - references to humanity. There are many more random pages from it in my gallery. This depicts a conversation between the ship (which is an AI) and its pilot. Text has been removed.

The final layout will probably be only a cropped version of this, to focus attention more on the conversation itself, without the distracting stuff in the lower left and upper right, but I uploaded this full version to DA for now. This might also double as a title page.

Some experimenting (made a quick model of the ship to try out the perspective was done in Google Sketchup (a really neat free 3D modeller), all else done in GIMP 2.4.5.

Comments and critique appreciated as usual.

Wonderful painting! I love the colors, light, and comic book feel. Plus, I'm delighted that you used Gimp and not a pirated version of Photoshop, like most people.

How would you compare GIMP and MyPaint? Currently, I use GIMP, but I've stumbled over MyPaint a few times on the Internet. What are the strengths of MyPaint over GIMP?

Thanks!

Thanks, glad you like it! I've never used Photoshop much to be honest; being a Linux user it's not really an option.

MyPaint and GIMP are quite different beasts. GIMP is a jack of all trades, you can do everything from photomanipulation to painting with it.
MyPaint on the other hand is a very specialized program - it concentrates 100% on painting. Its procedural brushes are far better than GIMP's due to a very different underlying engine. It does, however have very limited image manipulation features - it explicitly leaves this up to GIMP to handle. So the two programs complement each other nicely. I find that I do much of the painting work in MyPaint, and then move over to GIMP for detailing, adjustments and finalizing of the image.
If you are interested, at the bottom of my tutorial list [link] you will find a tutorial specifically built around combining MyPaint and GIMP.

Really nice work, glad to see someone really showing that given the talent that the free programs work just as well as the pay.

A conversation with a ship? That's a pretty interesting idea, I wonder what could be said between a ship and it's pilot! It must be a lively conversation though as she looks like she's moving about quite a bit ^_^

I imagine they would have a lot to talk about - imagine a ship able to tell its pilot if there are any technical issues to fix? In this image I imagine they are talking about something more personal though, she sure looks like she's enjoying the conversation at least.

I'm glad you said the last part because when you have a ship you can communicate with, talking about technical issues seems kind of insignificant compared to everything else you can share ^_^

Actually, letting your car tell you what's wrong with it sounds quite useful ... but true, if the ship would have a personality as well, it would probably have quite a different outlook on life and be interesting to talk to.

Oh but I never said it wouldn't be useful! But if you had a talking car would the first thought really be that you can finally ask it what is wrong with it? (Ok, if it's a really old one that is being held together by sheer luck alone maybe you would, lol.) Just like you don't talk to people simply to ask if something is wrong with them (including the ones without a personality) the same should apply to talking spaceships. Equal rights you see or they'll take over and destroy humanity or something.

I'm also thinking this through way too much. I'd love to have KITT for a car.

I'm not a big car-loving person (never owned a car even though I have a license), but KITT (The old series version TransAm) still strikes me as damn good looking car and still being cool 20 years later.

The new Knight rider was a disappointment, even the scanner didn't move in the right way...

Two lights on the new one, it didn't make sense to me...(not that that light ever made sense, but why change it). And yes, I meant the old KITT as well, that's a good looking car ^_^ Gotta love the new KITT's "healing" ability though, that looked so impressive to me.

Griatch-art In reply to VGiselleH [2009-04-14 14:26:05 +0000 UTC]

I liked the old KITT's healing better -- there was none. He needed no friggin' healing, nothing could simply hurt him at all!

What is "nanomachine cover" compared to a "molecular bond alloy", right?

The shapeshifting in the new series was kinda neat though. But it also worked to further remov the "identity" of the car.

Yeah, the new KITT's shapeshifting looked cool, but it wasn't needed. All the old KITT had to do to hide his identity was to roll his license plate to show something else and he instantly became impossible to recognize!

And you're right, the old KITT didn't need healing No matter how often he was shot into the air, he always looked brand new (or even newer!) when he landed

Ah the revolving licence plate. Cops were much more simple creatures back then it seems.

I hate to admit it, but seeing the old episodes I have to confess that I like David Hasselhof in that role, it fits him. Guess he was not yet tainted by Baywatch...

...I find myself wondering which actors did gain your aproval in the olden days He did a good job though, it can't be easy when your main co-star is a car and half your dialogue is spoken into your watch. Keeping a straight face while doing so would require some focus

Well, I'll just believe you then

And here's another observation: this piece of art inspires all kinds of topics doesn't it! It talks place it a futuresque kind of setting, but sparks memories from the olden days; it has a large spaceship talking with it's female pilot, and it reminds of another vehicle with it's male "pilot". And i teven encouraged the thought of what exactly would pass between a ship and it's pilot. Guess that makes this image just that more interesting than you'd think at first glance ^_^

I must admit, I've designed the ship (all of it, not only what we see in this image) and spent a lot of time looking at it. And despite you pointing it out I still don't see it resembling David Hasselhof in any way...

especially the texture of the ship, except for the back part of this ship, the texture looks like clay a bit to me, but its still great.

Looks good, especially the textures on the ship's hull and the highlights. The pilot's position looks a little awkward, but it looks like a bit of an awkward place to try and sit and get comfy while trying to hold a conversation (it looks about how I felt while helping my Dad redo the roof on the garage), meaning it's probably a good position to have her in.
Nothing jumps out at me as being off or out of place, and certainly no glaring errors like the last one. Very nicely done.

Thanks for the comment and analysis. Sure, her position is probably not overly comfortable, sitting on that metal surface while bending over on the side like that. Thanks for the fav, cool you like it!
