where the hero pays the price

selfish - ambitious - cunning - detached - bitter - violent

◯ On the surface, Denizen appears a calm and constant force - but on the inside, he is a storm, always thundering. He is prone to keeping his thoughts to himself, and rarely - if ever - revealing them to others. A wolf of few words, when he does speak the things he says are usually disengenuine. While it is not difficult to ascertain his true nature by observing him, he will never speak honestly of his beliefs or his opinions about others, unless doing so would benefit him in some way. There is a distant underlying charm about the way he converses, the intelligence that forms his discussion evident, but most burgeoning interest in getting to know him better is snuffed out by his dangerous nature. Many would agree that there is something most dark about him, much more than the colour of his fur.

◯ Denizen always has his eyes set on glory, and he will accept nothing less than perfect. He has high standards, and expects to enjoy all of life's little luxuries. This wolf will never settle for the life of a lesser, and does not prescribe to the belief that there is always room for improvement. Where the leader of the Kol sees value in everyone, Denizen sees only the culmination of their worth. If a wolf is not perfect by his standard, he has no interest them until they are so. Selfish to a fault, every action he takes is toward his own benefit, for he bears loyalty to no-one and nothing but power, or the promise of it. Ambition is his strongest driving force, and while he will work actively toward his goals, he is also no stranger to more underhand methods of getting what he wants. Manipulating situations to achieve his desired outcome is a skill that he believes will be justly rewarded. But where manipulation and shadows fail, he is not afraid to take what he feels he is rightfully owed.

◯ For many, power is not a quantifiable thing, but to Denizen, power is a thing that is easily measured. It can be found in rank, in influence, in magic, in blood. Any wolf with none of these measures of power is useless to him. He has been known to judge others based on the actions of those they are closest to, believing that one rotten apple can ruin the tree. For this reason, he has always been keen to shed any association to his own family, and remains distant from the children his brother raised on the wrong side of the island.

◯ Knowing as he does that one's status can be elevated by those around them, Denizen only keeps the company of the strongest, most respected or most influencial among the Kol. To those wolves, he will endeavour to endear himself - to ignite enough of their interest that they would speak well of him to others. He will, in all appearances, be their faithful ally, and remain so for as long as the bond is mutually beneficial. But make no mistake: he is not cowed by the fragile strings of attachment, which to him, are little but a means to an end. He has no concept of loyalty and is prone to discard others as soon as they cease to be useful, no matter their relation to him. Curiously, he is not prone to holding grudges, which he considers a waste of time and mental fortitude. Instead, he simply detests all his discarded in equal measure.

while i reap the rewards

◯ Were you to ask about his origins, Denizen would say they were unremarkable and not worth mention. In truth his life began very plainly, one of two brothers born to parents who loved one another in the most genuine way. Sweethearts since youth, they had wasted no time in settling down and starting a family, eager for that promised land of domestic bliss, expecting that they - like generations before them - would raise their children in a united world, free of pain and suffering.

◯ To Denizen, childhood feels like someone else's memories. He must have laughed, smiled, played, listened to his parents with rapt attention to learn from them, but he recalls little of it. The early months where his life revolved around his parents are little but a haze. Denizen himself wouldn't be able to recount it, but he began to show signs of a dark, violent streak from a very young age - biting too hard in play fights, drawing blood on more than one occasion. At first his parents corrected him gently, then later, more forcefully: despite this, the idea that causing pain to another was wrong never seemed to really sink in. In time he learned the art of control, how to stay his fangs before the skin broke, and his family was content with that, never knowing that the intent had never gone away. That he never did forget the feeling of knowing that he could make them bleed, if he wanted to.

◯ As the story so often goes, quiet Denizen was rather different from his outgoing and sociable brother, but despite their differences, they were thick as thieves in their formative years. They lived an easy life, wanting for nothing. These were the years in which they had no reason to disagree, no strong opinions of their own that they had not inherited from their parents, no worldy worries to weigh on their shoulders. They kept no secrets, because there were none to have. It was only when the foundations began to shift and change, that so too did the brothers. They were only year younger than Khonsu's sons, and their parents often compared them to those brothers, in whom they saw the finest examples of society. Wolves who held power, influence, and embodied the traditional values of their united pack: everything his mother and father hoped their sons would be. But they were also the first, most prominent example of conflict. Looking back, the first splinter.

◯ When Khonsu passed peacefully and named Osirus in his stead, many were divided, brothers among them. While his littermate saw Osirus a worthy leader, Denizen could not help but turn his eyes to Amuun, understanding the look that lingered there. Great power had been his destiny, and it had been stolen from him. It was here that Denizen and his brother first disagreed, each taking a side. There was something about that now-forgotten brother that held Denizen's attention, for reasons he could not explain - and when they day came that Amuun's life was ended, Denizen finally understood. He'd been captivated by Amuun, because they were one and the same. While the pack were eager to bury his name for the great crime he had committed, Denizen had come to admire him. Despite everything, he had taken what was his. Nothing convinced him more that Amuun would have been a strong, decisive leader than the manner of his death. And he challenged his brother, who so exalted Osirus - would you kill your own brother too?

◯ While all were distracted by the brothers quarrels, Malaysia was rising. For Denizen, it was not the intruige of magic or the life she breathed into stories and legends. She could keep her stories, as far as he was concerned, useless and fanciful. No, it was the wolf herself, the way she commanded attention and inspired devotion. Amuun was gone, but Malaysia arose to take his place, and now it was her who drew his interest. He began to be seen more and more often among those who listened to her promises, her sermons, and among those crowds he found so many others who were like minded. Who welcomed darkness as a friend. His parents had always told him that he should admire the powerful and influential, keep close to them; and they'd meant Osirus, of course, but Denizen found the powerful were here. In Malaysia's audience.

◯ The brothers could not agree on the future. While Denizen was taken by the growing movement that would one day be called Kol, his brother was following in the long established footsteps of their family. He'd found a mate, and would start a family. He encouraged Denizen to do the same, but every flight of fancy or urge that the darker brother induldged had never found a mark, never inspired within him that sensation to settle down. Denizen no longer desired a life which was stifled by the crushing expectations of the past, no longer wished to repeat the same patterns as generations before. There had never truly been any good in him: he had simply been going through the motions necessary to survive in a world that was not made for wolves like him.

◯ So when man breached the shore, Denizen was there, freed from the control his parents had made him believe was necessary. Whatever was left of him was forgotten that day, and as he feasted on the flesh of man, his brother swore to never speak of him again. Denizen left them all behind without so much as a second glance, distancing himself immediately from the rotted roots of his family tree and focusing instead on the newly-established Kol. In the North he flourished, fed and nurtured at last by a leader like-minded and a pack of heathens and demons just like him. While he knew better than to trust them, he fitted in amongst them just-so, showing nothing but absolute loyalty to the Alva and watching, with interest, the social divides that began to grow. Denizen was careful not to make the same mistake again, and while he still held close his parents values, he employed them more efficiently: building and developing alliances with useful influencial sorts. All the while keeping his focus. He had tasted power, and he would stop at nothing to keep it.
