Yes, it certainly is, and that's how he looks when he's partly undressed.

I've never seen the film in which he's unmasked, but my imagination leads me to think that it's something like the unmasking of the alien in Predator. Not very pretty !

This is actually Sir Nigel Gresley, and they would never disguise her as Mallard (in the way they did with Bittern, to make it look like Dominion of New Zealand), not only because the real Mallard still exists, but I don't think enthusiasts would stand for it.

This is the only way an A4 can be ugly! Quite shocking really. The smokebox door is really the bit I didn't expect TBH.

It just shows that even streamlined locos are really, not much different to standard locos.
Would you have called the "Duchess of Hamilton" ugly before she had her streamlining remade and replaced ? It's only because nobody is used to seeing an A4 without streamlining, that she appears ugly.

I would not call an unstreamlined Duchess ugly. And I agree, unusual does equal ugly quite often!

If all the rest of the streamlining was removed too, and the boiler painted properly, a naked A4 might not look too bad. But as the title reflects, only half of it is removed.

Let's ask them if they can provide pictures of a fully unstreamlined A4 at the next overhaul. I'd be really interested in seeing a fully exposed A4.

Actually it would be very interesting to see an A4 without any streamlining, and maybe even see one running in such a condition.

She's in pristine condition and running well on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, as well as main line tours.

I never knew 4498 had been seen publically in this condition. Mallard appeared in similar condition in 1988

I don't think it was normally seen in this state by the public, normally being kept hidden away in the shed behind it. I was just lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time.

Definitely never expected that an A4 looks like that underneath - it is most unusual.
