Dude, you should show Templesmith this. It's epic on a level I can't even describe. If you end up putting this into production... By all means, let me know.

Thanks man! Actually Ben has already seen it. He was kind enough to post it up on some of his sites. He also did a cool bit of photoshopping on the pic of my paint up to make it look like a cover.

There's no chance of it making it into production though. It was discussed briefly but nothing ever happened unfortunately.

Anyway, glad you like it.
Thanks again!

Dude, you're the Bad Ass!!! We need to get to working on something man. I've found a toy prototyping place over here to cast up my work, they're damn good too. I had them do Wormy for me, which I'm painting at the mo... it ain't going so well though...
But yeah, haven't asked them about vinyl production yet, don't think they do it. Getting prototypes done in resin, or full runs, isn't a problem. Just expensive is all. Anyway, figured I'd let you know.

Good to hear from you though man.
Take it easy.

Nice work Jamie. I love the hand, and the tall, slim posture. I have one critical comment for you if you want it, or this is the time to stop reading. His teeth look a little bit funny to me, as they are on a very wide and stretched arc. I think that if you left a little bit of space between the sides of his mouth and his teeth ( by making the arc narrower) they would look alot more natural on the character. That's all. Great work.

JamieDMac In reply to AndreasFrancis [2007-12-11 13:04:59 +0000 UTC]

Dude, if I didn't want critisicm I wouldn't put my stuff up here And I'm my own worst critic anyway. So I really appreciate it, thanks. I did do that actually... left a gap between the sides of the mouth and teeth and curved the teeth at the back so they went in more, but it made the mouth look smaller. And I wanted a wide looking mouth as possible trying to keep it in the style of Ben's art.
I played about with the mouth and teeth quite a lot, could never get them looking quite how I wanted. Maybe it would have helped if the mouth was a little bit wider, I dunno...

Thanks again!

Thanks Randy! I had some bother with the legs on this. They kept moving involunatarly for some reason. I think the armature wire I inserted in them might have reacted when I heated the legs to smooth them. Once the wax cooled it bended and cracked!

RandyHand In reply to JamieDMac [2007-12-11 19:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Hey Jamie!
You bet...
Did you say you did this with Super Sculpey?
Yeah, I keep shorting myself on my armatures sometimes...I get in too much of a hurry to start sculpting, when I need to just relax and put more time in to a really good armature that I'll know I can bend and adjust any way I need to.
Patience is what I'm trying to teach myself.
A really good armature is an artform in itself and if I get the armature right, everything seems to go a little smoother...
Take care,
Randy

JamieDMac In reply to RandyHand [2007-12-18 15:45:53 +0000 UTC]

Hey Randy, this is actually Casteline wax so it didn't require an armature for the whole figure. But what I had to do was extend the legs by an inch or two. So cut them off at the knees and inserted a length of armature wire into each to give them some extra support. I had hoped it would prevent them from snapping if knocked or anything like that. I think the wire wasn't quite straight in the legs so once the wax had cooled the wire would bend back out of shape. Probably should have used a thicker support...

Yeah, I don't have any patience when it comes to building armatures either... I just want to get sculpting right away so tend to neglect it and eventually parts come loose and you end up with all sorts of problems. That's one of the things I like about working in wax is you don't have to worry about any underlying support most of the time... downside though is it becomes so fragile to work on you find yourself accidentally breaking bits off... or it could be that I'm just a complete butter fingered klutz ...

I hear you Jamie!
I was the same with the Buttocks the Clown piece. Mine was extra thick though so it wasn't nearly as critical an issue. It still had a tendency to crack in places when I was working on it because it was wax as well. I tend to get a little aggressive with my pieces instead of just gently heating and carving some times. I can be quite the Homer Simpson when it comes to my armatures at times....
Take care my friend!

JamieDMac In reply to RandyHand [2007-12-21 00:58:03 +0000 UTC]

I do the same thing with being aggressive with the wax! Just a lack of patience I think what it is, feels like an effort at times having to continually heat the wax and tools so after a while it all becomes a little bit tedious. I want to work fast but of course with the wax it won't let you. Broken so many tools that way too. Still, I never learn...

paperfetish [2007-12-10 03:57:16 +0000 UTC]

I really liked the original, but I have to say, this new version is even better.

I like the overall proportions of this piece. The lengthened legs make a huge difference. It may be my imagination, but the increased distance from the last button to the hem of the jacket and how the jacket falls due to his hand being in his pocket are very minor details that are examples of (what I see as) the improvement of the proportion.

I also like the glassy smoothness and length of his legs in contrast to the texture in his hands, hair, teeth and skin. The new cigarette is a fantastic detail.

One question, is this a remake or did you rework the old sculpture? The hair looks *exactly* the same. I'm not sure what would impress me more: the fact that is is a total remake and the hair looks the same or that it is reworked an you were able to make the proportions work with your changes. Either way, very impressive.

JamieDMac In reply to paperfetish [2007-12-11 12:34:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! This is just the old sculpt reworked. What I did was cut off the legs at the knees and inserted some wire into each of the top parts of the legs, then fitted the lower parts on so there was a gap with the wire showing and just filled the gap in over the wire and blended it together. If you look closely at the legs you'll see the mid section is a different shade because I had to use a new batch of clay... it's quite difficult to see in this pic though. By lengthening the legs I also widened them slightly to give him more of a relaxed posture, like in Mr. Templesmith's art: [link]

Then I carved away at the body bringing the sides in so it wasn't so flared, by keeping it more straight I hoped it would help make the body look longer, and then added some clay to the lower part of the jacket along with extending the fold giving it more shape. And I resculpted the right arm also trying to make it more straight and tucked in more to the body.

I think I might have made his neck a little longer too, can't remember. I resculpted the mouth and added more clay to the sides of the jaw. I still feel the mouth could be a little bit wider though. The hair and everything else is just as it was before

I'm glad you like the new cigarette, thanks. Wasn't sure if it worked or not.
